Comments: | Thank you Robin, those comments explained a lot and I will keep that all in mind. I've only just now seen usage [note] tags here and there, and *just now* realized the "Sense note" field in "advanced search" lets you find existing examples. The [note] is a better approach than what I did. And sorry, yes, I was as bit uncomfortable calling that gloss [lit]. I will not do that in the future. I see the mailing list is posted online, I'll make an effort to read through things and catch up, especially on NG. |

Comments: | We use adj-i in cases like this because we want sites/apps to be able to handle inflected forms. Separating inflectional information from PoS tags is something that's been proposed for JMdict: NG. See the link above. I think ellipses used in conjunction with a note help to show how this expression is used. Transitivity tags are not used on expressions. 手がつかない would need to be a separate entry. A lit gloss should be a word-for-word translation. It wouldn't be helpful here. |

Comments: | Small change, I think "focus" is a better gloss for the meaning I've suggested. "unable to focus on work" vs. "unable to concentrate on work", this is mostly stylistic, I think, but google counts seem to roughly support this intuition. If this were treated as [vi], it really should be "to be unable to focus". And perhaps [lit] (said of something) to not hold one's attention If this is merely [adj-i], how do we get from here to 仕事が手につきません... ====== sankoku and daijs both use 集中 (concentration (on a task); focusing one's attention) nikk uses 身が入らない (can't: to give one's everything; to make one's best effort; to be enthused; to put your back into it) |

Comments: | Just made an edit to 風樹の嘆, and pointed it at this entry. "when you will wish" was not grammatical, which prompted me to edit to, something.... Gloss #1 aims to be literal. I don't think that "want to be filial" in isolation makes a lot of sense in English. I have a similar reluctance toward "I want to show filial piety", I feel like an indirect object is needed. Another possible literal gloss: when you want to show filial piety to your parents, they're already gone; For the second gloss, I've taken the imidas explanation(when you understand the hardships of your parents...) and tried to arrive at something more relatable/analogous to Western experience (since we don't really do filial piety here...). "It's too late to repay" tries to capture "you want to repay", which is the 孝行のしたい bit. It's ends up being ambiguous about the parents being dead-dead, but technically I think the original is as well? "It's too late to thank them" seems less ambiguous about them being dead, but "thank" could be a one-off gesture, and not a change in behavior (which repayment would require). Well, best I could come up with. I won't take it personally if the gloss isn't kept. |

Comments: | The entire definition in daijisen is 2 「風樹の嘆」に同じ。 This is not consistent across all dictionaries, so I went with the "particularly" option. But, given the daijisen entry, I think the derivation is probably from 風樹の嘆 backwards to 風樹, rather than the other way around (as it appears before this edit). I think the swaying trees are tied up in some sense of melancholy or regret. |

Filial obligation is the obligation of children to defer to parental wishes and meet a parent’s needs. This role not only includes contact with parents, having shared living arrangements, and providing routine care, but also involves providing physical, informational, and emotional support and financial help, especially when parents reach old age. This responsibility also includes more comprehensive efforts to ensure a parent’s safety, health, emotional well-being, sociability, and continued integration in society through contact with the outside world (Schorr 1960; Caro 2014; Whyte 2004). |

Comments: | Article seems to match Rene's comments from back in 2010. Suggested [see=] is a slightly more popular-looking kotowaza listed as a related-expression in the reference article. In particular, the linked expression is more literal, and might provide some insight on the thought-process behind this expression. I *never* know what dictionary term glossed with "filial" really means, since "filial piety" and "filial responsibility" (at least in my experience) are not so ingrained in western culture. So, I've gone ahead and tried for a more relatable gloss as well, but feel free to edit/drop it. For me "properly appreciating", in the western sense, would include things like "visiting, keeping in touch with, making sure they were well cared for", etc. "Doing what you were supposed to do when they were alive, and now they're gone". I think that's the right idea... If the second gloss is kept, I think there is a meaningful gap between "appreciating" and "properly appreciating", with the latter encompassing the thought "I may have done some things, but I should have done more". Like Rene, I think, it's probably less about "active" mistreatment, and more about passive neglect. |

Comments: | My apologies, thank you for the clarification from both of you. I was about to come back and say this was presumptuous of me, and that this is clearly an issue in jisho.org. jisho.org clearly usually handles this just fine(for short terms). And now I see, as you said, that it includes the readings after *all* of the links. I guess I never thought anything of it. It was just a coincidence that this broken link happened to have an explicit reading embedded in jmdict, and then I made a lot of assumptions. It looks like the length of this particular expression pushes it into some kind of tokenizer, after which the "reading" half is no longer identified as an element. But that's jisho's problem. Thanks again. |

Comments: | This is something being addressed in the "NG" version of the database, which is under development. If you set up an xref to just the entry alone ([see=2761770]) you get the reading in the XML edition, whether it's needed or not. |

Comments: | In daijs, unfortunately. Google returns basically nothing but some dictionary entries. Almost nonexistent on twitter. Maybe the rarest term I've yet seen, and can be literally constructed from the meanings of 利かす and 粋 if someone so desires. Should be no less valid than 粋を利かせる, with latter not having an entry here because it doesn't have a dedicated dictionary entry. (I'm currently matching up 利かす and 利かせる entries). I won't try and create 粋を利かせる, but it's a small inconsistency/distraction to have one entry without the other. |

Comments: | Doesn't refer to the couple itself. I don't have any suggestions for how it should be glossed. Without JEs or contemporary examples to refer to, I feel we're a bit in the dark when it comes to glossing archaic terms like this. Relying on definitions alone will inevitably lead to inaccurate glosses in some cases. It's one of the reasons I'd rather we didn't accept archaic terms as a general rule. I don't think an entry like this has much value. |

Comments: | Reconciling を利かす and 利かせる entries. どす apparently an appreviation of ドス I don't like putting ドスをきかせる ahead of ドスを利かせる, as it is inconsistent with other 利かせる entries, but the stats seem clear. Probably because this expression is more colloquial and already contains katakana, it is less likely to user kanji elsewhere. ドスを利かせる should point at ドスが利く, but this is an exceedingly rare usage, to the point that sankoku has an entry for "ドスの利いた", but none for the verb form. xref to this expression instead... The expression alone, for its part, is more common than this verb. |

Comments: | Just about the end of matching up 利かす and 利かせる. This form is 13% of actual use, so seems to warrant inclusion with the others. Seems preferable to mark [rare] for pedagogical reasons, but maybe the numbers are too high? Couldn't actually find a dictionary to back this one up, interestingly. But it's not hard to google examples (and the n-grams are there). There was some conversation on the xref thread about whether "glare/scowl" was a common sense. Image search suggests that it absolutely is (lots of pet animals). Here, for example, are a bird and two cats (using this form 利かす). https://twitter.com/mpmb7/status/1537723679312080896 https://twitter.com/shojiyukiya/status/1585475594669547520 https://twitter.com/fcummavo/status/1329235154787680256 |

Comments: | I came to this entry when checking the フラスタ submission. I see that フラワースタンド usually means a structure for holding flowers, pot plants, etc. However, it's also used for a tall flower arrangement for ceremonial occasions, hence the proposed second sense. From the hits and images for フラスタ it seems that (abbreviation) is almost always used for the arrangements. I'll approve for an xref then reopen. |
