I have referred this entry and its comments to Kim.

  Comments:
Yes, hiding rare irregular kanji forms is our usual practice. If 含羞む were in other refs, we'd tag it as rK.
Jim, Brian's suggestion to contact the people at jisho.org and alert them to the uk/sK issue seems like a good idea. At the same time, you could remind them about recently added field tags (e.g. ski, film, tv, rommyth) which still aren't supported on jisho.org.
11. A 2023-02-24 22:04:37  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Since the kanji form is in プログレッシブ it should be searchable. it is very rare and I agree it's probably best hidden. [uk] should stay as that has some impacts on apps using this data for parsing.

  Re: Robin
It is my understanding from reading here that the jisho.org maintainers are pretty responsive. Is there a chance someone with existing connections could make a request:

Please don't display the "usually kanji" or other kanji-dependent tags (eg. [gikun]) when no kanji are displayed due to [sK]?

  Re:Marcus

I had/have the exact same viewpoint. From the vantage of studying kanji, rather than studying vocabulary, I like seeing these forms even if they are rare. But I defer.
Here's the github discussion for reference:

  Comments:
We decided a while ago that we didn't want both [iK] and [rK] tags on the same form, so the alternatives were to tag it [sK] or to drop it altogether.

We've been dropping rare and irregular forms which don't produce any n-gram counts (see: Robin's comment on 1238790). Since 含羞む gets a few hundred counts, I don't think we should dismiss the idea that people will search for it. I think having these search keys in the database can also be useful for programs that are designed to parse and tokenize text.

Many entries are affected by this policy. See for example comments on entry 2854734

  Comments:
No point in having 0 ngram versions in this entry.
サラリー-マン in most kokugos so サラリー・マン is OK to keep for "compatibility purposes," I think.

We don't do notes that pertain to the English glosses rather than the Japanese word normally. (and I strongly think we shouldn't, it can easily lead to misunderstandinga)

  Comments:
To be clear at the outset, I don't think it's the best idea to just add [vt] to this entry and call it a day (although there may be an argument for that), since that usage still appears prescriptively "wrong".

Is there any sort of annotation or comment available (or, could one be created...) to indicate that "brandish" is commonly used with をさせる? (I think the answer is currently "no"; if not, is this something worth discussing on a larger scale?)

Something like... "especially を~させる"

I *almost* came in and suggested that this should be [vt] after looking at only the を一閃 and が一閃 n-gram counts. But the dictionaries are unambiguous as to what is "correct", and a more detailed n-gram search shows what's going on. In short, there is a whole lot of を一閃させる. You can させる pretty much any intransitive suru verb, but this is an unusually high percentage of use here, I think.

Why am I posting this comment... When I see "brandish" and "intransitive verb", as a non-advanced learner I just scratch my head... Like, "what am I supposed to do with this?"(I am studying the 閃 kanji character). In fact, this was my exact motivation to research this term right now. While I don't have any other examples off the top of my head, this is a familiar feeling from using jmdict over the years(Which is to say, I'm sure there are other terms in this class). For what it's worth, it's often just as confusing to see an entry simply listed as [vt],[vi] with no explanation.

While not directly related to my question, evidently even Japanese speakers screw this up and use it transitively(or, the language has changed but the dictionaries won't acknowledge it), as one can see in the n-grams for 刀を一閃し and 刀を一閃して, or by searching 刀を一閃 on twitter. In fact, for the 刀 case it looks like almost 30%~40% of uses are already transitive. And since the n-gram statistics from a decade ago, this could have shifted even further since then.

sankoku, my vaunted "modern" reference, still lists this is strictly intransitive.

I appreciate any thoughts/suggestions. I considered dropping this straight into github, but this is the only example term I had. Please let me know if that would have been a better idea.

  Comments:
I very much doubt that this entry in its current state could cause offence and/or confusion. There are only two senses, and this is the preferred term when referring to milking of an animal. It would look odd leading with "breast pumping".
7. A* 2022-04-05 13:30:21
  Comments:
Normally you order senses based on how common they are, correct? Doing it the other way here without a good reason risks alienating/offending users who happen upon the word as it is most commonly used. suddenly seeing "milking a cow or goat" in the context of human breastfeeding can offend people, but the opposite wouldn't.
6. A 2022-04-05 07:38:05  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I'd leave it as-is. It's not really a distinct sense in that breast pumping is another form of milking. They could be merged.

I'm fine with [rK] in spite of the statistics - it is "correct" - but whatever you decide. Note: statistics for 極 and 谷 should probably not be directly compared, as they are not generally considered interchangeable in correct usage. (谷 = 窮 only, it seems). There are modern examples of 谷まる in yourei, it appears here and there online, but is indeed rare.

If we [sK] 谷まる, I think all instances of 谷まる should be [sK] across all entries, including 進退極まる and 進退これ谷まる. If 谷 is removed from 進退これ谷まる, that entry should probably just be deleted.

Making this suggestion because of the incongruity with 春霜, where the reading はるしも was added in 2013. I imagine the use cases for しゅんそう・はるしも and しゅうそう、あきしも are roughly comparable.

It seems like the evidence suggests that しゅうそう is the correct, historical, poetic reading. But maybe naming a battleship あきしも didn't do the historic reading any favors(though the furigana.info reference predates even that).

Couldn't figure out how to make "complete knowledge" a verb.

"to know something down to the finest detail" is a direct translation of both the daijisen and daijiten entries, and I think it does a good job making it clear what the nuance of this is vs. similar terms. "having full knowledge" aligns with the 知り尽くすこと gloss.

n-grams (and definitions) seem to make it clear this is primarily a transitive suru verb.

sankoku, daijisen, and daijiten all give 精通 in the definition or as synonyms. daijsen and sankoku gives 知り尽くすこと. 精通 is vastly (50x) more common than this term, and 知り尽くす is somewhat more common while giving a morphological example of "to X exhaustively". I think there is some value in linking 悉 and 尽くす.

Reconciled with 食い尽くす.

Was going to add "completely" to make "to completely consume", but the gloss for 食べ尽くす looks good to me. Dictionaries give them as synonyms, not sure why they wouldn't be.

Was going to add [see=食べ尽くす], but we don't seem to do that for the other 食い->食べ entries, and the popularity is not that far apart. And, a lot of these 尽くす entries are redundant, as they all mean "to do X completely", so perhaps it's not so critical one way or the other.

When making this call, I noticed the statistical disparity between 食い残し and 食べ残し, and decided it was maybe worth trying for a [see=] over there instead.

I think we can stay with [sK] for such a rare form. The 進退これ谷まる entry is rare and marginal and really has no impact here.

On further thought, I'm removing [sK] from 谷まる in favor of [rK]. It is "correct', and this form *does* appear in yourei, even in recent works. You can even find the off appearance in wikipedia.

There is another recently added entry "進退これ谷まる". If we [sK] 谷 here, it will looks very strange for it to appear there. And if we go strictly off of statistics, there's an argument to [sK] 谷 out of the きわまる entry itself.

Note: for statistical purposes, only 窮 and 谷 are actually considered analogous by Japanese people, so their relative statistics should probably not consider the more-common 極, which throws off a lot of numbers.

no dictionary entries for 窮, and yourei and google news are exclusively 進退窮, so I'm adding 極 as [sK], even though the statistics might otherwise be high enough to display it. 極 is well-represented on twitter though, so definitely worth at least the [sK].

sankoku suggests that 谷 and 窮 are "technically" interchangeable, but doesn't have a dedicated entry for this expression.

I'm planning to raise an issue about this on GitHub. I'm going to suggest that we copy GG5's approach and have only a single visible reading – *with* nakaguro – for all non-[uk] acronyms. The nakaguro-less forms would be search-only (as would readings that contain variant pronunciations of letters). I've made an edit to show what this would look like on this entry.

This should be aligned with へそが茶を沸かす.
The above prog example shows that it's not just an exclamation. We should probably have two senses.
へそで茶を沸かす appears to be significantly more common than へそが茶を沸かす. I think we can drop the x-ref from this entry.
I think back-references are helpful for editing purposes but not so helpful for learners. And they'd introduce a lot of clutter on some entries.

Adding an xref; There was already a reference in the other direction.

These expressions seem about equally popular, strongly related, but with significantly different nuances. I can *easily* see how someone could search for へそが..., or へそで... base on something they have read, and find one term but not the other.

Usually it doesn't seem a great loss that jisho.org doesn't display backwards references, but this feels like an exception.

  Comments:
Just a quick comment about "jisho.org doesn't display backwards references". You are only seeing them here because you are getting a maintenance view of a fairly complex relational database. The distributed dictionary file (jmdict.xml) only contains forward references. AFAIK no app tries to do backward ones - it would be very difficult to implement.

英語で「へそが茶を沸かす」は何ていうか翻訳家さんに聞いてみました
https://eicolsyo.com/hesogatya1/

prefers で, list が as synonym
https://ja.wiktionary.org/wiki/臍で茶を沸かす

A whole novel about just this expression, and how が used to be considered correct, then it changed to で due to misunderstandings and/or logical grammaticality, and now で is correct and が should be considered an error. (but people still use が too much)
https://reibuncnt.jp/25008

listed under で, 「臍が茶を沸かす」とも。

Curiously, sankoku lists this item under が with で as subordinate:

「臍で茶を沸かす」には、「面白かったり滑稽だったりして笑ってしまう」という意味もあるのですが、「まともに相手する価値がないほど馬鹿馬鹿しいために失笑する」という意味もあります。
google translate: "Boil tea with the navel" has the meaning of "laughing because it is funny or comical", but it also means "laughing because it is so ridiculous that it is not worth dealing with seriously".

ヘソが茶を沸かす: only two senses for synonyms:
笑いたくなるほど馬鹿馬鹿しいさま

https://thesaurus.weblio.jp/content/ヘソが茶を沸かす
  Comments:
Also agree with Robin on these being synonyms.

Took a stab at this. This entry で seems to be the "most correct" (and most common) form. I think the other entry should be merged here, deleted, or be replaced minimally with [see=this-entry].

Looking around, the "subject" such as it is, is often introduced as なになに なんて。。。It can be used to describe a piece of information, with or without (ような) (話、こと), can be followed with ほど or くらい. Another "adj" usage, for example レベル: 自民党が駄目でも野党が輪をかけて駄目な状態で、全員とかへそで茶を沸かすレベル。

On twitter there are a surprising number of posts ending in
へそで茶を沸かすわw
Is this a feminine exclamation?

This is structurally a verbal, but seems relatively rarely inflected, though it is used in the past tense ("I laughed"(at the absurdity, or because it was very funny)). This is also such a whimsical expression, that you will find in て form to play with it. Just a few I picked out:
へそで茶を沸かしてティータイムですねw☕️

「統一教会」「国葬」・・・岸田首相のおかげで臍が茶を沸かして大火傷。救急車を呼ばなければ・・・

..!臍で茶沸かしてぶぶ漬けして食べなはれって言いたいどすな!

ちょっと臍で茶を沸かしてもいいですか? (Said after quoting something absurd claims)

臍で茶を沸かした水蒸気でタービンを回せば電力問題も解決だ(錯乱) (If the steam from the tea boiled off your belly powered a turbine, you could solve our power problems)

With regards to the 馬鹿馬鹿しい xref, I've seen it used in a number of definitions/explanations. It's so well-known by Japanese students that I think it has more explanatory value than whatever gloss I might provide.

I'll leave this here for now, I'm sure what I've done will need corrections/modifications, so thank you in advance.

Ah, final note: "in one's navel" vs "with one's navel"... image search makes this clear. A tea pot is literally placed on top of the protruding, overheated navel. So this is "on", not "in".

My apologies, thank you for the clarification from both of you. I was about to come back and say this was presumptuous of me, and that this is clearly an issue in jisho.org.

jisho.org clearly usually handles this just fine(for short terms). And now I see, as you said, that it includes the readings after *all* of the links. I guess I never thought anything of it. It was just a coincidence that this broken link happened to have an explicit reading embedded in jmdict, and then I made a lot of assumptions.

It looks like the length of this particular expression pushes it into some kind of tokenizer, after which the "reading" half is no longer identified as an element. But that's jisho's problem. Thanks again.
9. A 2023-02-24 03:18:44  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
This is something being addressed in the "NG" version of the database, which is under development.
If you set up an xref to just the entry alone ([see=2761770]) you get the reading in the XML edition, whether it's needed or not.

This entry seems absurdly rare, but in daijs, so feel free to discard this suggestion with little/no remarks. (I will understand the meaning :)

Instead of an xref, would it be possible to just *add* 進退これ谷まる and 進退維谷まる as [sK] in 進退窮まる? They are entered as exact synonyms anyway. Then if you search for this term you'll get the right answer, at least. No one is going to learn this form from this dictionary and then try to apply it. (or, at least they shouldn't).

Then, if desired, we could [sK] the 谷まる forms without leaving an inconsistency. (or leave them [rK], which I am still fine with).

(Also, note: There is a far-more popular 4-character compound which we don't carry, same kanji, same meaning: しんたいいこく【進退維谷】. It's *extremely* common-looking in Chinese news sources, but not actually so much in Japanese, so I haven't made an effort to add it. Appears in 四字熟語辞典)

I think we should mention Ibaraki.
Similar varieties are described as "red" in English.
According to the links above, 圷ねぎ is another name for 赤ねぎ/レッドポワロー. The 4th link says that 赤ねぎ is a general name that includes the レッドポワロー/圷ねぎ.

Yes, "pH" is by far the most common form in the wild.
Implementing the proposed "initialism reading" approach.

I suggest removing the xref.
Which reading of pH is more common, this or ペーハー? I suggest the less common version should xref the more common one.
