Comments: | Wiki tells me Austin is the 11th-most-populous city in the United States. The only state capital with a larger population than Austin on that list is New York City. Population isn't everything but if Austin is not considered a "significant" state capital then we should probably not bother mentioning "capital cities" of Anglosphere states and provinces in policy at all. |
|
8. | D 2023-02-21 03:02:57 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Thanks for reminding me. If we're not including all US state capitals, this can go. |
|
7. | A* 2023-02-21 02:23:59 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | "(US)" is used in 40 entries, "(USA)" in 14. They should be aligned. I prefer "US". We don't mention the state on any US city entries, as far as I know. The editorial policy on proper names in JMdict was tweaked about a year ago to add "(if significant)" to the "states and provinces of English-speaking countries and their capital cities" category. (See the discussion on 1077200.) Austin is one of the larger US state capitals but I'm not sure it's needed here. |

Comments: | Leading with 柏手を打つ seems sensible to me. I note that most of the JEs only have 柏手 for かしわで. Brian, for future reference, clicking to the last page of search results on Google doesn't give you the "true" number of hits (unfortunately). Google never retrieves more than a couple of hundred results for any given search query. I only get 197 results for "cat" after reaching page 20. |

Comments: | I am only re-ordering relative popularity. There is already a separate entry for かしわで in this dictionary, and it already orders 柏手 ahead of 拍手. If this change seems controversial, I'm willing to go out polling Japanese people. There is the potential that I am mistaken, but to the extent that this is an entry for the "word" かしわで, I think the primary kanji are 柏手, and I think the references support this. I was motivated by the fact that かしわ "Japanese emperor oak tree" is a super-odd reading for 拍, and *the* reading for 柏. I spent two hours googling around. If I understand correctly, *apparently* a long, long time ago, maybe someone wrote 柏手 instead of 拍手(ancient typo), and then people later read that typo かしわで, and this may be how the term came into existence. 柏手 should almost exclusively be ceremonial religious clapping, and I *think* almost always pronounced かしわで(though the 音読み is はくしゅ). There is a recent book "神社で拍手を打つな", which uses the 拍 kanji, but it *also* gives furigana on the cover to avoid the natural はくしゅ reading. However, an article in the popular magazine "president" on the book has the title "「神社で柏手を打ってはいけない」", switching kanji. (though it also gives furigana for かしわで in the article, non-jouyou). It is definitely apparent that both kanji are used though for かしわで. n-grams are complicated because, among other things はくしゅを打つ is also valid (but only with 拍手), and 拍手を打つ is *a* way (if uncommon compared to 拍手を送る) to express "clapping" in general. (Example given with a news article on "Street fighter Arcade edition(video game)". Maybe just the "act of clapping the hands together" (as in the video game reference), rather than "applause". If I'm to believe the friendly article at classy-online, 柏手 should not be read はくしゅ, and if I trust the shinmeiguu.com article, when used for clapping in prayer, 拍手 should be かしわで(not はくしゅ). So *hopefully* this entry does not need the further complication. |

Comments: | I think 旨く行く should be visible as 旨く is arguably the more "correct" kanji form. Most of the kokugos only have 上手い as a "多く「上手い」「巧い」と書く" note on the "skilful" sense of うまい. Given that this is usually written in kana, I wonder if we can apply the sK tag a bit more liberally. Do we really need 上手くいく, うまく行く and 上手く行く all to be visible? Even the most common of these is only used ~16% of the time. I'd be happy just to have the full-kanji form, even though it's the least common of the three. This would be a departure from how we've been doing things up till now but I think it's a neater approach. |

Comments: | Was going to lobby for [sK] over [rK](or [oK]?), even though it's in daijisen. The statistics speak for themselves, so I don't really mind if this is amended to [sK]. On bing, searching for "綜括" you have to go through 6 pages of dictionary entries, mixed with mentions of a very modern real estate agency (綜括不動産). Then the 1st hit is a pdf scan of a 1950s academic research paper. Was scouring twitter for the last bit of confirmation, and stumbled on the image of a book with "綜括編" on the spine. 『#東海の先史遺跡』綜括編(1963年)Looks serious enough, I guess this was at least somewhat legitimate at some time in the mid 1900s. https://twitter.com/ore_nest/status/1564519842426023939 https://twitter.com/ore_nest/status/1564519842426023939/photo/1 Although, google N-gram Corpus Counts 総括論 244 綜括編 No matches Otherwise, there is one reasonably known quote with 綜括. Comments: | The meaning is not wrong, and the collocation is used, but see my comments on suggested-deletion of the entry for 反乱を鎮める. Everything written there applies here, but more-so (this collocation is even less common). In short, its meaning is obvious from the components, it's guessable by someone who knows the terms 反乱 and 抑える, and if you know another verb for "suppress" that's probably safe to use as well. I doubt this has standalone J-J dictionary entries, and there are far more common translations. (反乱を鎮圧する seems far more common) It seems maybe these two entries exist because of the ambiguity in their parent entries (静める・鎮める and 押さえる・抑える respectively). It is definitely *not* currently clear, for example, whether 押さえる or 抑える is the correct form for "suppressing a rebellion" when only looking at the parent entries. But maybe there is a way to improve the main verb entries to resolve that? |

Comments: | Curious about the response here. I'll ask in advance - if we don't want to delete this entry, would a new, nearly identical entry for "反乱を鎮圧する" be accepted if I created it? I'd suggest that maybe in place of this entry, the glosses under the entry for 静める could be split up a bit, with the current "to suppress" being changed to "to suppress(eg. a rebellion) especially=鎮める". Or, maybe しずめる warrants two independent entries (my J-J dictionary lists them separately). The current entries for 抑える and 押さえる might be taken as a model(although there is some ambiguity there as well). Looking at n-grams I think 反乱を鎮圧する would be a far more productive gloss for "to quell a rebellion". Google news "反乱を鎮圧した" 20 hits "反乱を鎮圧し" 18 hits "反乱を鎮め" 6 hits "反乱を鎮めた" 1 hit From the editorial policy - Is it worth including? * is its meaning not obvious from the component parts? Meaning is obvious * is it not what someone reasonably proficient in Japanese would come up with when trying to express the English meaning in Japanese? Yes, *and* this isn't the best form. * is it already in one or more dictionaries? It's phrasal, so probably not (except as an example sentence) |

Refs: | Don't really need a reference for this, but I can say the wikipedia page includes the note: なお、拝礼の作法は神社や地域によって特色があり、厳格な決まりはない[4]。 (no rules, worship etiquette may vary by shrine and region) 二礼二拍手一礼 https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/二礼二拍手一礼 Another historical, less common pattern is, for example: 三礼三拍手一礼 |
|
Comments: | I invite comments/changes to this edit. Sorry if this seems overly trivial, I'm making this post as a not-overly-sensitive person :) I had replaced "standard" with "common", but ended up convincing myself to remove that as well. My question/emotional reaction when reading this definition is "*a* standard form of worship" or "*the* standard form of worship". Oddly, I wouldn't mind either one personally, but I don't like the feeling of trying to "guess" what the dictionary is saying. The problem is that this practice is, so far as I can tell from personal experience and google, objectively "the standard", with the proviso that there are still other ways to do this at different shrines and different regions (different numbers of claps, different numbers of bows). If we mean "the standard", I think "the" should be added unambiguously, even though policy shies away from articles. If we don't want to make such a committal assertion, we could say "a standard". Or, if we don't want an article, and don't want to take a firm stance on Japanese religious practices, "common" seems easily fair enough given the prevalence of this ritual in Japanese society. Or, we could just say "(form of worshiping at a shrine)", the only loss being that it really is super-common, and we're no longer communicating that. I've searched pretty much every gloss with "standard" in it, and this issue really is limited to just this, and one related entry (or I would have gone the github route). If a change is made/accepted here, the identical change should be made to the entry 二拝二拍一拝. |

Comments: | I appreciate all the time reviewing my comments. My two cents, since I guess I started this... Since 反乱を抑える and 反乱を鎮める actually were approved for deletion(which was my larger motivation, because I actually found them to be misleading), I think it would be completely consistent to *not* create this entry. (Consistent with Robin's remarks on 反乱を鎮める). On the other hand, this is a very nice collocation now (and there are lots of collocations in this dictionary, whatever the actual editorial policy might be). If I searched for either 反乱 or 鎮圧, I think this entry would be particularly elucidating to see, and I would probably build a flashcard off of it. (As we've seen, there are a lot of terms for "suppress" to chose from in Japanese, for example). Beyond that, I don't think I have a definitive view on whether this should or shouldn't actually be here. Not that it was my call anyway :) But I won't be bothered with whatever everyone else decides. |

Comments: | I think 月足 means something like "monthly share price movement", and hence GG5's 月足 + チャート but it seems that often it's used as the name of the chart of such movements. Not sure if a sense split is appropriate. |
