Sorry for the mess, I'm certainly open to other ideas. It does seem that 可塑 would generally only be used in cases that would translate to "plastic" and "plasticity", so even though "moldable" is more comprehensible as a meaning, I think, it's probably not a good gloss.

"粘土の可塑性" is googlable - the plasticity of clay, but no hits for "可塑の粘土", for example.

I just felt that
[n] plastic
was too misleading for general English use. Perhaps [adj-no] alone is a sufficient change.

It also seems that in most cases that one would want to use 可塑 as an adjective, they should use 可塑的 or 可塑性 instead... Can 可塑 be [rare] if 可塑的 is not?

  Comments:
可塑, literally "able-to-mold" seams to correspond to the English *adjective* plastic, but not the noun. Simply defining this as plastic[n] makes this look like a synonym of プラスチック.

Even though all の adjectives are noun-ish, this seems to be principally an adjective looking at the dictionary entries (which include daijisen). 可塑物 would be the closest thing to a generic noun(already in jmdictdb).

Note: google translate converts 可塑 to "plasticity", same as 可塑性

  Comments:
Looking at the n-grams (85,000 hits), this isn't a niche term and I think it's hopefully worth giving a bit more detail.

I don't know how jisho.org works precisely, but I think that the simple gloss of "overpass" has perhaps caused jisho.org to cross-reference the English-language wikipedia "Overpass" with the Japanese 跨線橋. This is misleading, and the English "Overpass" wikipedia entry, while it has links to 40 other languages, specifically has no link to the Japanese site. There does not appear to be a comprehensive Japanese wikipedia entry for what westerners think an "overpass" would be.

The wikipedia entry for 跨線橋 contains only pictures of commonplace(in Japan), everyday pedestrian rail crossings.

I know jisho.org's behavior is not specifically jmdictdb's problem, but usually when jisho.org provides Wikipedia links for a term, it is a good sign that the term is the "canonical" term for whatever is linked. That definitely is not the case here. (オーバーパス might be better, but it doesn't appear super-common in Japanese, and it has no wikipedia entry in any case).

If I had my druthers, I would also include "usually pedestrian". Both the dictionary definitions and wikipedia reference specify that vehicle bridges would be included, but it's exceedingly hard to find such examples.

I'm going to reopen this. There's a big difference between being a 1) nobleman - a person part of the nobility who in most cases held
little power, and 2) being a "powerful Japanese feudal lord" who "ruled most of Japan from their vast, hereditary land holdings" (enwiki).
The meaning is different enough to qualify splitting in both Japanese and English. If the two meanings in English look too similar, that
can be handled by making them more different

This isn't some obscure little historical issue but the word is used with both meanings today. If somebody looked up the use of "tonosama"
in hyakunin isshu decks (for one example of contemporary use of the word in the Heian sense meaning) and walked away with the
understanding that the "tonosama" cards of those decks depict "powerful feudal lords", then we've done them a disservice.

Sorry for the mess. This mirrors a change in suggestion with 可塑. "moldable when heated" is perhaps ok as a definition, but not a good gloss, as 熱可塑 will pretty much always be translated as "thermoplastic". After circling back to the entry for 可塑, I realized that the limited use of this term with の is entirely consistent with this actually being an adjective corresponding to the English adjective thermoplastic.   Comments:
My suggestion of "rare" with cross-references is a bit of a clunky way to say "usually as 熱可塑性 or 熱可塑性樹脂". I don't know if there is a better way to do this.

Google "autocorrects" searches of 熱可塑 to 熱可塑性
Wikipedia cross-references thermoplastic to 熱可塑性樹脂
amazon.co.jp doesn't even *recognize* 熱可塑 as a search term, and returns no results. Lots of results for 熱可塑性.
The Japanese wikipedia for 熱可塑性樹脂 does not contain 熱可塑 without 性, though it does have links without 樹脂, such as 熱可塑性エラストマー

On the surface, it appears that "熱可塑性" describes the property of any material which becomes moldable when heated and hardens when cooled, and that this is how this concept entered the language, not as an extension of 熱可塑 (though this may be an increasingly common back formation).

I originally checked the "this entry should be deleted" box. But it appears that in limited contexts (such as "熱可塑の加工"), this may be used in a professional setting, even if it remains the less-common variant. And Japanese has a tendency to shorten, so moving from 熱可塑性 to 熱可塑 colloquially seems like a natural thing that could happen.

And, it's in Weblio. I wonder what other major dictionaries carry this as a standalone.

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/thermoplastic
softening when heated and hardening when cooled, and thus able to be moulded

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/thermoplastic_resin#English
any synthetic material, such as polyethylene, that can be molded when hot but becomes hard on cooling

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermoplastic
A thermoplastic, or thermosoft plastic, is any plastic polymer material that becomes pliable or moldable at a certain elevated temperature and solidifies upon cooling.[1][2]
  Comments:
Extensive comments already on the entries for 熱可塑性樹脂 and 熱可塑. In English "thermoplastic" as a noun and "thermoplastic resin" seem to be more-or-less synonymous.
I'm not sure if this is strictly "rare", but it is "rare in comparison" to the main usage 熱可塑性樹脂, and if choosing a translation for "thermoplastic[n]" 熱可塑性樹脂 seems to be the most desirable choice.

Making this suggestion because of the incongruity with 春霜, where the reading はるしも was added in 2013. I imagine the use cases for しゅんそう・はるしも and しゅうそう、あきしも are roughly comparable.

It seems like the evidence suggests that しゅうそう is the correct, historical, poetic reading. But maybe naming a battleship あきしも didn't do the historic reading any favors(though the furigana.info reference predates even that).

Google image search for オーバーパス: lots of volleyball
Google video search for オーバーパス: lots of volleyball
Google news search for オーバーパス: Maybe 15/85 volleyball/infrastructure

This appears to be a natural shortening of オーバーハンドパス, "Overhand Pass" which already has an entry in this dictionary. youtube video search results for either long "オーバーハンドパス" バレー or short "オーバーパス" バレー are endless.

While an "overhand pass" could theoretically exist in many sports(google image search pulls up basketball, but you can't actually find the term), actual verifiable references seem to overwhelmingly correspond to volleyball, and the weblio daijisen reference specifically identifies volleyball as well even for they full オーバーハンドパス.

Maybe オーバーパス should also be added to the オーバーハンドパス entry?

I suspect that volleyball represents a rather large percentage of real-world use of this term, even vs. infrastructure.

ABS filament is the most commonly used 3D printing plastics. It is used in the bodywork of cars, appliances, and mobile phone cases. It is ***a thermoplastic*** which contains a base of elastomers based on polybutadiene, making it more flexible, and resistant to shocks.

The filament is extruded and deposited by an extrusion head onto a build platform where it cools.

https://www.flamesofwar.com/hobby.aspx?art_id=6933
With the release of D-Day: British comes the first of our Thermoplastic figures, the British Airborne.
Since Thermoplastic is a relatively new technology, and as working with it is slightly different to any of our other plastic figures, it’s worth taking you through a few primers on how Thermoplastic behaves and how you can get the most out of our new figures.

https://www.iqsdirectory.com/articles/plastic-injection-molding/thermoplastic-molding.html
Thermoplastic molding is a manufacturing process that works to create fully functional parts by injecting plastic resin into a pre-made mold. Thermoplastic polymers are more widely used than thermosetting polymers in injection molding. The main reason is that thermoplastics can be repeatedly softened by heating and solidified by cooling, making them highly recyclable materials. Materials left over from a previous molding process cycle are re-grinded and added back to the injection chamber along with virgin pellets.

Definition of Thermoplastic Molding

  Comments:
With the growing popularity of 3D printing using various plastic filaments, I think the term "thermoplastic" has become ever-so-slightly more mainstream. Granted, acronyms for specific thermoplastics, like ABS and PLA, are infinitely more common.

In industrial scenarios, English-speakers seem perfectly happy to drop the word "resin" from "thermoplastic resin"(or, perhaps more likely, not consider "resin" at all, which may be why the wikipedia article omits the word).

All of this said, it is hard to find 1-to-1 uses of "thermoplastic"[noun] with much of anything in Japanese. 熱可塑性エラストマー(elastomer/TPE) seems somewhat more common in marketing, which is a more-specific category of thermoplastic[resin]. I've seen 熱可塑性のプラスチック and 熱可塑性プラスチック, katakana サーモプラスチック, TPE(e=elastomer), TPR(r=rubber), サーモプラスチック・ガム, サーモプラスチック・ラバー...

2. a synthetic plastic or resin, such as polystyrene, with these properties

While agree that it is harmless (and perhaps desirable) to translate 熱可塑性樹脂 as "thermoplastic resin" in the J->E direction, my concern is the E->J effort to translate the English "thermoplastic"[noun], as used in the Wikipedia headword. It appears to me that the proper English translation of "thermoplastic"[noun] to Japanese is 熱可塑性樹脂, and I don't see any other candidate Japanese words in this dictionary or anywhere else.

I've included references that define "thermoplastic" as "a thermoplastic resin" and "a synthetic plastic or resin, such as polystyrene, with [the properties of being thermoplastic]"

The current entries in jmdictdb make it look like "熱可塑" is the word for "thermoplastic"[n], and that 熱可塑性樹脂 is some particular special kind of resin related to it.

Instead, it appears that "thermoplastic resin" and "thermoplastic"(as a noun) are synonyms in English. Resins are usually liquids, but because a thermoplastic returns to a soft/liquid state when heated, then hardens when cooled, there is no distinction between the plastic and the resin. "In the wild" in Japanese, it is clear that 熱可塑性樹脂 is vastly more common than 熱可塑 alone, which seems to be in line with it being the actual analogue to plain-old "thermoplastic".

This is a kind of neat derivation... Like "plastic"(adj) meaning "moldable", thermoplastic originates as an adjective "moldable when heated", which is precisely (熱(可塑))性, which would seem to be the reason that in Japanese you need a noun 熱可塑性(樹脂), since it isn't as if 可塑 = プラスチック on its own... is it?

I just searched 可塑 in jmdictdb, and the definition seems to be plastic[n]. Not sure about that....
