Comments: | Newer editions of daijr has the above sense. I note that GG5 is the only JE with "〔直ちに〕 immediately; straightaway". Daijr and daijs mark this sense as archaic. The smaller kokugos don't have it. I suggest replacing "immediately" and "straightaway" with glosses that correspond to daijr and meikyo's second sense. I don't think "abruptly; rapidly; quickly" are quite right. |

Comments: | Question marks should only be used for sentences. I think the kokugos classify 何[counter] terms as nouns, but the definitions often end in "...のときに用いる語", "...を表す", etc. so it feels like a separate category to me. Is the "何人" in "何人いる?" considered adverbial? The "what ..." (as opposed to "how many ...") terms seem to function only as nouns. GG5 and meikyo and have the third sense. I think it should stay. I think the "what article" sense should lead. |

Comments: | reversed [n] and [adj-na], added xref, removed "best work" (somewhat misleading, somewhat inaccurate). added [dated] to [2] (last reference). [adj-na] appears to actually be quite uncommon. You can google things like 傑作な作品, 傑作な歌, or 傑作な話. They exist. But this seems dwarfed by strict-noun usage. Skimming briefly through yourei's 5000+ examples, I found no [adj-na] usage at all. (I only looked at a few pages) reverso overwhelmingly prefers "masterpiece", sometimes masterpieces. "best work" is only in a few E->J translations. The "best" in "best work" gives a strong implication of "only one qualifies.", i.e. "the finest book he has ever written", but that is not the case. Removing "best work" reduces this confusion. "masterpiece" alone risks this "only one" connotation. Adding the extremely-common "最高傑作" makes it clear that "傑作" is not necessarily the artists finest work. It's just very good(another reason I dislike the "best" gloss here). 傑作 3058438 85.5% 最高傑作 520759 14.5% <-- that's a pretty incredible count One of... 傑作の一つ 14858 68.4% 最高傑作の一つ 6851 31.6% daijs: たいへんできばえのよいこと・作品 I wanted to drop "boner" as [dated] on our side, but it looks like the Japanese expression is probably also [dated], so marked as such. |

|
Comments: | To improve the function of "Text Glossing", i'd like to add the second spelling variant, since its usage seems common enough. A note concerning Googits: when checking with Google in the context of making or modifying database entries here, i always use quotation marks around the query string. However, Google has the habit of showing, at the top, a hit number that is in many cases vastly larger than the number of hits that can actually be found - it looks like that large number includes whatever fuzzy matches Goolge deems appropriate. To get the number of exact matches i go forward in the list of displyed items until i reach (in most cases) the end of the list where a comment like this appears: 最も的確な結果を表示するために、上の749件と似たページは除外されています。検索結果をすべて表示するには、ここから再検索してください。 |

Comments: | I commented on "broadcasting" in my previous submission. Clearly this term is used, and in particular "broadcast spreader" seems to be the English name for a tool that scatters seeds around as you move it. I think I was just showing my own ignorance there. It would still be nice to see a more everyday definition, as I am not sure this is a commonly known term among layman gardeners. I worry that I might be cherry-picking results by seeking out references, but I think I see ばら蒔き pop up in gardening contexts often enough that I don't think it is "rare", at least any more than the verb 蒔く is rare. I don't know that there is a point in this, but looking for what a "broadcast spreader" might be in Japanese, I found "ばらまき機" (not super common) and some uses of ばら蒔き機. It seems like 散布機 might be the common term for this. I can't find 散布機 and ばらまき in the same context, though I don't know that that is indicative that ばら蒔き cannot be translated as "broadcast". There seems to be some redundancy in 散蒔く and 蒔く, insofar as the English translation of 蒔く "to sow" already carries a connotation of "to plant by scattering seeds". I am wondering if 蒔く and 種蒔き, both comparatively common, don't actually include such a strong connotation of scattering as "to sow" does in English. Otherwise what does ばら蒔く add to 蒔く? Oxford "to sow": to plant (seed) by scattering it on or in the earth. "fill a pot with compost and sow a thin layer of seeds on top" Webster: : to plant seed for growth especially by scattering |

Comments: | When I posted my update to ばらまき政治, I wrote up a whole treatise for this entry, and for ばらまく. I decided to do some more research first, but since this entry seems to be getting some review, and I don't know when I'll be able to survey large numbers of Japanese speakers, I figured I'd post what I have and see what you recommend. The gist of my thought is that I don't believe that ばら蒔き (or ばら蒔く) should be [rK] in the sense that entries are usually marked [rK]. ばら蒔き may be *comparatively* rare when put next to ばら撒き, but I think that's because ばら撒き has super-common every-day uses(scattering of almost anything, but money, flyers, water, etc. especially), while ばら蒔き seems like a common form for a very uncommon activity, "planting seeds by somewhat randomly scattering them about"(vs. planting in an orderly pattern). My attached references include a very nice 3-minute video where ばら蒔き is demonstrated, including subtitled verb forms like ばら蒔こう。 It seems to me that if you are a Japanese gardener, this kanji form might be quite ordinary, which is why I don't think it is [rK]. (I also have some examples of the full 散蒔き form). I wasn't sure how this could be resolved. I thought that perhaps some "only" annotations on specific senses might work, though it looks like ばら撒き can be used for seeds, and ばら蒔き can be used metaphorically for gossip, rumors, etc. (just has English can use the farming term "to sow" or the generic term "to spread" in similar metaphorical contexts). But I think that ばら蒔き for flyers/チラシ, for example, is probably not just [rK], but flat-out wrong, and would imply planting the flyers in a field(same for ばらまき政治). (I think the dictionary entries that use 蒔 show the strong farming connotation of this kanji, with 撒 being more versatile) I've seen cases where two very similar entries exist in this dictionary with the same kana forms but different kanji. I wonder if giving the less-common ばら蒔き its own farming-relating entry would make both entries cleaner. "To plant [seeds] by scattering unevenly", or something. 蒔く, after all, contains the meaning "to plant", "to sow", which 撒く lacks. In fact, maybe that's the best argument... 撒く and 蒔く are already independent entries. Perhaps ばらまき and ばらまく should mirror that for similar reasons? I know that would take some work... Note that I have one example of ばら蒔き for spreading manure in a field, and that Japanese people clearly do also use ばら撒き in farming contexts. With regard to the recent change to "broadcast seeding" (or the old "broadcasting" verb for seeds), as a U.S. english speaker that doesn't really communicate a lot, and even with the [uk] annotation, the wikipedia entry for "Broadcast seeding" specifies "over a relatively large area."(industrial farming, I imagine). If my references are any example, you can do ばら蒔き perfectly well in a small flowerpot or home garden, and that might even be the most common usage. Note: this submission removes [rK] from one entry, just so there would be a diff to reference... But I don't imagine that would really be a solution on its own. I'm not sure what the right approach is here. |

6. | A* 2023-01-07 02:10:54 Robin Scott <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | I'd argue that 498 is very low, and n-grams aren't the only thing to consider. From what I can tell, this is simply a Chinese word that some Japanese supplement companies adopted (in the 90s?) as a way to market the plant as a treatment for certain diseases (like diabetes). And it was evidently a short-lived fad; there are virtually no recent examples of this word anywhere on the web. I don't think it's appropriate for a JE dictionary. |
