|
Comments: | Newer editions of daijr has the above sense. I note that GG5 is the only JE with "〔直ちに〕 immediately; straightaway". Daijr and daijs mark this sense as archaic. The smaller kokugos don't have it. I suggest replacing "immediately" and "straightaway" with glosses that correspond to daijr and meikyo's second sense. I don't think "abruptly; rapidly; quickly" are quite right. |

Comments: | The standard Western spelling for this type of Japanese knife seems to have settled on "petty knife" (effectively a loanword back into English); the references are a bunch of Western knife/cook shops that use and define 'petty knife' that way. (If you google for 'petit knife' it will assume you mistyped 'petty knife'.) I add "kitchen" to "small knife" because if you don't want the technical cheffy term it's helpful to know that it's specifically a kitchen implement. (Ref: Daijisen defines it as "小形の洋包丁。野菜や果物の皮むき用". I'm amused that there it's defined as a Western-style knife and in the West we define it as a Japanese-style knife, incidentally.) |
