大辞林、広辞苑、新解さん

Previous entry (“comic interlude”, as given in GG5) was misleading, dare I say *wrong*? 大辞林 gives a very clear and detailed definition.

Aikyōgen is not a comic interlude, but is a brief, dramatic, generally *expositionary* section within a noh play.

I didn’t catch this earlier and got confused because kyōgen co-occurs with noh in *2* ways: as a separate (comic) play, *between* noh plays (this is just called “kyōgen”), and as a scene *within* a single noh play (this is what aikyōgen refers to, as the 国語辞書 make clear).

This was clarified to me b/c I went to a noh performance today, and both these occurred, with only the (very serious, not at all comic) scene *within* the noh play being referred to (in the program) as “aikyōgen” (as in the 国語辞書 and as I’ve corrected it here).

Japanese has some neat words.  This seems to be a relatively bog-standard word for "behavior" (or "conduct") that explicitly includes speech. (vs., say, 行動).  Whether "speech" needs to be expressly included in a translation is situation-dependent, often it does not.

My encounter:
あの年の男子は女の言動に一喜一憂するからな
tr1. boys that age are easily effected by how girls treat them  (I considered "treatment" as a gloss, but that's not so well supported)
tr2. girls can make the emotions of boys that age swing wildly. (女の言動　is simplified into "girls" (their actions and words implied)) 

Since I'm here, "words and actions" seems more commonplace than "words and deeds". I've just gone ahead and left "words and deeds" in as well; you could drop it.  But I would object to "speech and deeds" or "speech and actions" as unidiomatic. I think it's better to repeat "words" than force in another synonym of "speech" into a clunky pairing.

I think it's better to offer "conduct" than "speech and conduct", and including both would certainly send a confusing message.

Just to follow up on Rene’s comment (previous suggestion had been “venture-backed company” and “start-up company”): I do have relevant business knowledge and experience in this area, and the standard American English term for this is emphatically “start-up company/startup company”.

The 和英 dictionaries that translate it as “venture” are hewing too closely to the Japanese – in American English (both business-speak and everyday speech), “venture” generally refers to the *capital*, not to the small company.

I was going to suggest this should be deleted, but it's more common than I thought it'd be and the one 
example for 見た目 in daijs.

i don't see the need for the note.  "sightly" is a perfectly fine word for this; people can take the negative of it themselves should they see 見た目に美しくない.

although i'm putting it in, i'm not entirely convinced this needs to be an entry.  it's obvious from the sum of its parts.

i don't think this is idiomatic in english or japanese...  it's just straightforward use of ~時代.  by comparison, 学生時代 and 幼年時代 (both of which we have) are far more common, refer to periods in ~everyone's~ life, and have more idiomatic english translations
