Refs: | https://context.reverso.net/translation/japanese-english/お大事に Get well soon Take care Please take good care of yourself. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Response_to_sneezing 大丈夫? (Daijoubu?) Note: It is very rare for anyone to acknowledge a sneeze in Japan, and it is customary not to say anything at all. After multiple sneezes, they use these words. https://eow.alc.co.jp/search?q=お大事 Gesundheit〈ドイツ語〉〔くしゃみをした人に対して〕 Variations on "take care": https://nativecamp.net/blog/study/12070 This resources acknowledges "bless you" in explaining *English*, and even cautions against using the word "God" in the expression in modern use. Best example is sneezing. https://toraiz.jp/english-times/daily-conversation/11760 Comments that "Bless you nuance is for sneezing, and "God" is usually omitted anyway." https://native-phrase-blog.com/11342553929/ 【ニュアンス解説】くしゃみをした相手に「お大事に」といった意味で使われます。 クリスチャンかどうかはともかく、もはや口癖の域に入っています。 「Bless you」の前に「God」が入るのですが、省いて言うことがほとんどです。 |
|
Comments: | The very religious "God bless you" in particular seems misleading about the Japanese nuance of this term. But to me, these glosses don't seem applicable in the first place. I hear "お大事に" every single time I leave my vet's office, and when someone learns I've been ill as "get well soon". I cannot imagine either scenario as an opportunity for "bless you" in the west(in 2023). Japanese people don't say *anything* when you sneeze, which appears to be the motivation for eijiro ("Gesundheit") and this entry ("Bless You"). This looks like part of an E->J effort to explain the English phrase "bless you"(after a sneeze), but does not look applicable to J->E translations. *And*, if you know what you're doing, you shouldn't translate "bless you' to お大事に anyway. You just shouldn't say anything. === Alternatively, some implementation of: bless you( after a sneeze, but Japanese people don't say anything when you sneeze) |
