Comments: | * “joys and sorrows” is more idiomatic * FWIW, this is essentially synonymous with 悲喜 (大辞林と広辞苑 give identical definitions), but used in different set phrases. Further, GG5 translates them subtly differently as “joys and sorrows” (plural – many events, 哀歓) and “joy and sorrow” (singular – the emotions themselves, 悲喜). Compare 人生の哀歓 “the joys and sorrows of life” with 悲喜交々(の人生) “(a life of) a mixture of joy and sorrow” – admittedly quite subtle. |

Comments: | This is an old pronunciation of 傾く(かたむく) – I suspect that it’s more prevalent in 関西弁, since I’ve encountered it twice here (once in speech of a woman in her 60s – so born 1950s, once in writing of 田辺聖子 (兵庫県、1928)). However, I don’t think it’s limited to Kansai, so while it might be labeled “dated” or “dialectical”, none of the tags seem to apply, so I haven’t tagged it. |
