Comments: | I think it's best to think of おなかがぺこぺこ/腹がぺこぺこ as set phrases. ぺこぺこ always refers to hunger. I don't think "empty" would be a helpful translation here. |
|
9. | A* 2022-02-15 00:47:18 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | I did mean "hungry", because the subject is usually (always?) お腹 - お腹がペコペコ. You don't say your stomach is hungry. "empty (of stomach)"? |
|

Refs: | daij, chujiten |

Comments: | I assume you meant to write something other than "hungry". I don't think we should use adjective glosses for sense 3. Only daijs and nikk have it as an adjective. Sense 1 is 形動 in the kokugos. I think adj-na is fine. It's just almost always predicative. I don't think the x-refs are needed. |

|
Comments: | Is this really [derog]? The glosses give the strong impression that this term is limited to small groups of people, but that doesn't seem to be the case. My current show is using it regularly for towns, and even entire countries of people. The number one reverso gloss is "people". This is cambridge's gloss (along with folks). I agree with "guys", but I think "these guys" "those guys", and other formulations could work. And I think the "those" is likely to appear explicitly when appropriate, such as: あの連中 15844 <-- those guys (in some contexts) この連中 26669 <-- these guys (in some contexts) With regards to larger groups of people: あの国の連中 168 この国の連中 275 この街の連中 111 この町の連中 192 Outside of "people", and maybe "folks", I don't think any of the previous glosses can work with あの国の... There's nothing even mildly derogatory about the way I'm currently seeing it. sankoku says なかまの人々. [軽く見て言うことが多い]. Maybe it's derogatory in some contexts though, I couldn't say. |

Refs: | I only looked at sense [3] the last time I edited this entry, but it looks like the other two sense notes are wrong as well. * Meikyo has 価 on the "price; cost" sense. * Obunsha has a long 〘使い分け〙 section in which it explains that 価 is associated with monetary sums and 値 is used for abstract merit and worth. * Sankoku splits 値 and 価 into separate entries and describes 価 as "price; cost." * GG5 also uses 価 in its example for the "price; cost" sense. I'm adding [form] tags as well. * Iwakoku says the "price; cost" sense is 既に古風. * Shinmeikai describes both of these senses as やや改まった表現. * Sankoku has a 文 tag both senses. |

Comments: | Used at dinner last night by a Kyoto chef (for v. young tuna) – when I said “oh, like よこわ”, he said “smaller – よこわ is bigger – and how do you know よこわ anyway?” (b/c I saw it at the スーパー). This accords with the last references, which states: しんこ→よこわ→ひっさげ→まぐろ I’ve marked it as 関西弁 – it seems dialectical (none of the 国語辞書 I have have it), thought it’s probably more widespread (and varied) than just Kansai, though as usage demonstrates (being used for shad), the specific fish seems to differ regionally. (Dialectical words for 出世魚 are probably not a top priority, but while we’re at it…) |

Comments: | The 国語辞書 define this pretty generically and narrowly as “words, terms, jargon, etc.” but it’s used for short writings as well (as countless Google page/picture results demonstrate, and as 大辞林 entry for 一行物 demonstrates – you’re not covering a decorative scroll with random jargon, but with a short writing.) |

Comments: | 馬鹿 and でかい are already in the dictionary, and the meaning of 馬鹿でかい could certainly be inferred, but I've actually only ever seen でかい used as part of 馬鹿でかい, so I thought it might be worth adding as a phrase. The kanji should probably have a [uK] designation, but the instructions say that should only be added by registered editors. The meanings I've listed are just a few examples, and are just variations on the same sense of the word. The first time I ran across the phrase, it was actually being used as a translation for "Brobdingnagian" :-) Please edit or change the meanings as you see fit. |
