Comments: | Used at dinner last night by a Kyoto chef (for v. young tuna) – when I said “oh, like よこわ”, he said “smaller – よこわ is bigger – and how do you know よこわ anyway?” (b/c I saw it at the スーパー). This accords with the last references, which states: しんこ→よこわ→ひっさげ→まぐろ I’ve marked it as 関西弁 – it seems dialectical (none of the 国語辞書 I have have it), thought it’s probably more widespread (and varied) than just Kansai, though as usage demonstrates (being used for shad), the specific fish seems to differ regionally. (Dialectical words for 出世魚 are probably not a top priority, but while we’re at it…) |

Comments: | The 国語辞書 define this pretty generically and narrowly as “words, terms, jargon, etc.” but it’s used for short writings as well (as countless Google page/picture results demonstrate, and as 大辞林 entry for 一行物 demonstrates – you’re not covering a decorative scroll with random jargon, but with a short writing.) |
