Comments: | I've thought about this a bit, and checked our other XX後 entries. Yes, it's highly productive and can be tacked onto almost any event. Entries where we should include it are things like 一死後 where the meaning can't be deduced from the elements. Similarly, for 言葉後 sense 2 makes it a necessary entry. Others, such as 戦争後 are a bit more doubtful, but even then, I like to bolster the E-J capability, so having a gloss of "post-war" is rather useful. Post-can-opening? probably not. I'd favour dropping it. |

Everyone was glad to hear the news. | There was no one who didn't rejoice at the news. Daijirin makes a point of it being used that way? Yes, and a point of it meaning anyone/everyone. How can the proposed amendment make the entry much less useful ...when the previous entry is the complete opposite of the truth? How is that, at all useful? Not misleading? According to the previous entry, 誰一人知らぬこと translates as "a thing no one doesn't know", which is to say "a thing everyone knows" ...when it actually translates as "a thing not a single person knows" |

Comments: | I think it's important to record how this is actually used. There are 18 example sentences, all of which use negative verbs and translate it as "no one; nobody". Daijirin makes a point of it being used that way. The proposed amendment would have made the entry much less useful. (The proposed change to 一切 has a similar problem.) |

《with neg. verb》 ▶ (not) anyone ▶ (not) a single person ▶ no one ▶ nobody |
17. | A 2019-09-08 00:57:36 Robin Scott <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | I'd just like to add that we include "no one"/"nobody" here for the same reason other JE dictionaries do: it's helpful. These are the most common English translations. It's the same with 誰も. "誰も知らない" translates to "no one knows", not "everyone doesn't know". This difference in structure between English and Japanese is not especially difficult to grasp, especially in context. I think excluding these glosses would actually be more confusing to a leaner. |

Comments: | "with neg. verb" is our way of indicating 下に打消の語を伴う as in koj or (…ない) as in gg5 I am restoring the version that was approved by Robin, Jim, and (now) me, which matches what GG5 has. Rather than re-editing an entry approved by three of the editors, this is an issue for the mailing list. The entry for 誰一人 is not the place to relitigate how an entire class of entries is written. |
