This can of course refer to the cup that instant noodles are served in but I don't think it's an abbreviation. I suggest dropping that sense. It's not supported by any of my refs.

Are you sure this is an abbreviation of 救急患者? Both 広辞苑and 大辞林 imply it's a contraction of 急病の患者. Contractions using the 23 kanji are pretty rare - usually the process is 13.

I think there's a meaning for this word that is missing... something more like "furiously", but not in the sense of being angry... rather the sense of doing something as quickly/earnestly/vigorously/enthusiastically as possible.

I've seen it used that way, and this is also reflected in the example sentence for this word:

警官がやってくるのを見ると彼は猛烈に走り出した。 When he saw a policeman coming, he began to run like anything.

The subject wasn't running violently, vehemently, or ragefully, which are the current definitions for 猛烈.

i agree with Nils here.  ultimately it doesn't really matter to me as long as we're consistent.  in this case, i probably lean toward splitting since that's what the majority of my refs do (although it's a fine line)

Pages such as http://photozou.jp/photo/show/573277/46707434 and http://katz.air-nifty.com/blog/2009/06/2009-7f44.html use 半玉 for a half melon. I don't know which reading - I suspect はんたま or はんだま, but I can't confirm it.

Quite common at noodles restaurants; worth adding to avoid confusion with 半玉（はんぎょく） at least.

(Confused users may think “wait, does this mean a child’s portion?” instead of realizing that it’s simply a half-size portion.)

It's mentioned in GG5 in the 適応 entry, I agree, though, that it's not needed.

strictly, this entry fails our makeshift criterion for including ~的 entries.  it has to appear in a major kokugo dictionary (or gg5, etc.)  in this case, not even eijiro has a standalone entry for it.
