I think there's a meaning for this word that is missing... something more like "furiously", but not in the sense of being angry... rather the sense of doing something as quickly/earnestly/vigorously/enthusiastically as possible.

I've seen it used that way, and this is also reflected in the example sentence for this word:

警官がやってくるのを見ると彼は猛烈に走り出した。 When he saw a policeman coming, he began to run like anything.

The subject wasn't running violently, vehemently, or ragefully, which are the current definitions for 猛烈.

i agree with Nils here. ultimately it doesn't really matter to me as long as we're consistent. in this case, i probably lean toward splitting since that's what the majority of my refs do (although it's a fine line)
3. A* 2011-08-31 01:26:02  Nils Roland Barth <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Following up:
* GG5 separates 夏季(かき10) and 夏期(かき11)
…as do 大辞林 and 広辞苑
Some of the smaller dictionaries do merge them, such as 研究社中 ジーニアス and 新解さん

Also, it should probably be consistent across seasons (currently EDICT has the other seasons split).
* GG5, 大辞林, and 広辞苑 all consistently split them.
* 新解さん consistently merges them.
* 研究社中 and ジーニアス tend to merge them, but don’t include many of the 〜期 forms (e.g. 秋期)
I’m fine either way (they’re quite close in meaning), but that’s why I suggested splitting this too – the more detailed/major dictionaries do so.
2. A* 2011-08-30 11:06:49  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I think I merged them in the first place, and both 新和英中辞典 and ルミナス和英辞典 merge them, I think the basic meanings are the same, and if there are some nuances, better to split the senses: summer period/summer season and put some "esp." notes on the senses.

* Add spelling 汁だく which is very common (also often written as kana).
* Pointedly did *not* add the spelling 汁沢 – it’s firstly quite rare (~5k Google hits, vs 1m+ for others), and secondly unclear that this is the etymology (may be from だくだく rather than 〜沢山+連濁).
If we want to include v. obscure (mis?-)spellings, 汁沢 is permissible, though I’d rather wait until someone sees it in the wild (if you do, please add it).

Pages such as http://photozou.jp/photo/show/573277/46707434 and http://katz.air-nifty.com/blog/2009/06/2009-7f44.html use 半玉 for a half melon. I don't know which reading - I suspect はんたま or はんだま, but I can't confirm it.
1. A* 2011-08-28 06:05:33  Nils Roland Barth <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Quite common at noodles restaurants; worth adding to avoid confusion with 半玉(はんぎょく) at least.

(Confused users may think “wait, does this mean a child’s portion?” instead of realizing that it’s simply a half-size portion.)

strictly, this entry fails our makeshift criterion for including ~的 entries. it has to appear in a major kokugo dictionary (or gg5, etc.) in this case, not even eijiro has a standalone entry for it.
