I've seen it used that way, and this is also reflected in the example sentence for this word: 警官がやってくるのを見ると彼は猛烈に走り出した。 When he saw a policeman coming, he began to run like anything. The subject wasn't running violently, vehemently, or ragefully, which are the current definitions for 猛烈. |

Comments: | I don't have any objections to the edit, but re: the [rK] tag at 4%, I just assumed that most of the n-gram counts were from personal names. I should have included that explanation, though. |

Comments: | ぜんまい is also 発条 (spring) so 薇 is more common than the raw counts suggest (but I wouldn't have tagged it as rK even at 4% of total counts). The kana forms still dominate in culinary contexts. I can't find a source for "osmund". "fiddlehead fern" doesn't refer to a species. |

Comments: | i agree with Nils here. ultimately it doesn't really matter to me as long as we're consistent. in this case, i probably lean toward splitting since that's what the majority of my refs do (although it's a fine line) |

Comments: | Following up: * GG5 separates 夏季(かき10) and 夏期(かき11) …as do 大辞林 and 広辞苑 Some of the smaller dictionaries do merge them, such as 研究社中 ジーニアス and 新解さん Also, it should probably be consistent across seasons (currently EDICT has the other seasons split). * GG5, 大辞林, and 広辞苑 all consistently split them. * 新解さん consistently merges them. * 研究社中 and ジーニアス tend to merge them, but don’t include many of the 〜期 forms (e.g. 秋期) I’m fine either way (they’re quite close in meaning), but that’s why I suggested splitting this too – the more detailed/major dictionaries do so. |
|
2. | A* 2011-08-30 11:06:49 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | I think I merged them in the first place, and both 新和英中辞典 and ルミナス和英辞典 merge them, I think the basic meanings are the same, and if there are some nuances, better to split the senses: summer period/summer season and put some "esp." notes on the senses. Rene? |
