|
Comments: | to me, an "academic calendar" is something different (usu. a giant book containing course listings, school regulations, etc.). although it usually contains a proper "calendar" in it somewhere, that part usually only takes up about 10 pages of a few hundred. (e.g. http://www.westerncalendar.uwo.ca/2011/index.html) so i'd say "academic calendar" is misleading. but perhaps this is just NA usage or nikkoku's definition is incomplete? |

Comments: | I think it's a neologism that happened to coincide with a rare existing word. The modern meaning is quite consistent with the semantic use of the kanji. I suggest adding "recent meaning", although it may well have been around for decades. |

Comments: | The Nikkei ref is an interesting discussion, and the second examples show its (mis)use. I guess we may have to accept that the word has taken on another meaning in modern Japanese, and the dictionaries haven't caught up. A note on the second sense? |

Comments: | not sure this is 100% accurate. appears to be an "open kitchen" that is separated from the dining room by a counter. == gg5 has 対面型[式]キッチン a kitchen with a counter in an opening in the wall adjoining the dining area. [=カウンター·キッチン (⇒カウンター2)] == the overwhelming majority of "open kitchens" appear to have this though, so sure. |
