Comments: | で Is itself a contraction of にて, hence the meanings are identical*. I think keeping it in one entry reinforces the notion that they are related and used as alternates of one another - plus it saves the need for an additional entry that would be essentially copy-and-pasted from this one. *I cannot recall ever seeing にて used for the sense I have just added and indeed upon searching for an example I could not find many. Further, that sense is not even listed under the にて entry for the daij's, which at the very least implicates にて is not commonly used for it. I also went over to the classical Japanese dictionary of the link above, and it seems にて did not originally hold that meaning. Still, I do not think much would be gained from a split. Worst case scenario, someone will start using にて left right and centre, but even then, they would at most sound odd while still being understood by any native speaker*. *Dialectal variation sold separately. |

Comments: | Separate issue but I think we should undo the にて merge. Even if the meaning is identical (I'm not sure whether that's the case or not), it's a different register. |

Comments: | It has just caught my eye that both [5] and [6] are marked as conjunctions, have similar glosses, and both link back to て. It seems there was both a cross-reference from で to て and one from て to で, and that the previous [4] snatched the one coming て when I raised it to [5]. I shifted them around to circumvent this and have also removed the cross-reference leading from here as it was seemed redundant to have them go both ways. |

Comments: | Changed [aux] to [prt] as it is classed as a 接続助詞. Completely changing glossary as "Indicates continuing action" will likely lead anyone learning of this word through this entry to think of a continuous verb rather than a conjunction. Senses are based on the references listed, mainly daijr, they are not absolutely exhaustive but these should be the main ones. I opted to make [1] what it is as most other senses can be imposed upon it by context. If accepted, I would like to suggest deleting the 5th sense of the entry on ~で that leads here: it is same word and the changes to notes in this entry should make it unnecessary. |

Comments: | Thanks for the clarification. I was going to argue these senses shouldn't be included because it's a conjugation for only a limited set of verb classes (一段 and する/くる?) and we don't have similar entries for -そう, -とう, etc. which should be equally valid... but I realized these senses are actually included in daijs' and daijr's よう entries and we do actually have an entry for "た" ("indicates past tense") in JMDict as well. _ My preference would still be to follow GG5's example to not include these senses and also not have an entry for た, but I guess that'd be a topic for the mailing list instead of the comment section of this one entry. _ In the meanwhile, I've tried improve the 3 senses because I don't think the definitions/notes were very clear. I've moved the previous glosses into usage notes and added actual glosses. To what extent the glosses are helpful, I'm not sure, but until the separate issue of glossless senses are resolved, maybe this will do. I also moved the previous sense 1 to sense 3 as I think it's the least common aux-v usage (if that's indeed the correct PoS). _ "verb stem" - is this the right term? I forget |

Comments: | The ref above explains an interesting nuance, which is born out in the GG5 glosses. I think I'll keep them apart, and upgrade them a little. I have merged this one with 鎮静化, so it can be deleted. |

Comments: | i've difficulty telling apart 沈静 and 鎮静. nc also combines them. as far as i can tell, the only real differences are that 沈静 sometimes acts as adj-na and 沈静する is always intransitive, whereas 鎮静 is never adj-na and 鎮静する is both transitive and intransitive. meaning-wise they're very similar. |
