[n,adj-no]
▶ deception ▶ make-believe ▶ fake ▶ counterfeit ▶ phony |
5. | A 2011-08-19 22:26:50 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | I don't think "ersatz" is a good translation. まやかし means fake/counterfeit. ersatz means imitation/substitute. I'll add ersatz to 模造. |

Comments: | I ran across another meaning for this word. It is used in the book I'm reading as the translation for "ersatz". It's just a variant on the other definitions, but I thought it might be worth adding, since there is no other translation for "ersatz" in the jmdict. |

Comments: | Splitting as per the refs. A bit subtle. I really doubt 供に belongs here, however I see a few refs such as the 実用日本語表現辞典 say "「共に」と同じ。「供に」は当て字。" In expressions such as "供に従える" it's really got its follower/attendant sense. |

Comments: | * Add [n-suf] – used as suffix (as in GG5) * Add [vs] – seems to be used, given in 中辞典 (as 選をする) * Add 撰 – frequently used, and AFAICT used pretty interchangeably with 選 (I see 撰 on food a lot, as in 和菓撰 (“select wagashi”) at FamilyMart, and on some nattō). * I don’t know that there’s any difference in usage of 撰, so no notes/glosses to that effect – maybe a bit more used for poetry (per dicts), but it seems to get plenty of use in food, say. |

Hope definition is ok – it’s a bit intricate to describe, b/c it’s so unfamiliar (I’ve omitted minor details, like the knob/horn-like bits at the top). I wonder if the 葛(かずら) is a corruption/respelling of 鬘 “headdress, wig”, which makes more sense etymologically. |

Comments: | Changed [aux] to [prt] as it is classed as a 接続助詞. Completely changing glossary as "Indicates continuing action" will likely lead anyone learning of this word through this entry to think of a continuous verb rather than a conjunction. Senses are based on the references listed, mainly daijr, they are not absolutely exhaustive but these should be the main ones. I opted to make [1] what it is as most other senses can be imposed upon it by context. If accepted, I would like to suggest deleting the 5th sense of the entry on ~で that leads here: it is same word and the changes to notes in this entry should make it unnecessary. |

As this has been drifting for months and nobody seems to want to touch it, I would like to highlight that I was not saying all these senses are needed, I made them in bulk so that an editor could pick them out if needed - the entry could be reduced to only [1], [6] and [7]. Comments: | Thanks for the clarification. I was going to argue these senses shouldn't be included because it's a conjugation for only a limited set of verb classes (一段 and する/くる?) and we don't have similar entries for -そう, -とう, etc. which should be equally valid... but I realized these senses are actually included in daijs' and daijr's よう entries and we do actually have an entry for "た" ("indicates past tense") in JMDict as well. _ My preference would still be to follow GG5's example to not include these senses and also not have an entry for た, but I guess that'd be a topic for the mailing list instead of the comment section of this one entry. _ In the meanwhile, I've tried improve the 3 senses because I don't think the definitions/notes were very clear. I've moved the previous glosses into usage notes and added actual glosses. To what extent the glosses are helpful, I'm not sure, but until the separate issue of glossless senses are resolved, maybe this will do. I also moved the previous sense 1 to sense 3 as I think it's the least common aux-v usage (if that's indeed the correct PoS). _ "verb stem" - is this the right term? I forget |
