If 共和 was invented as a translation for the Dutch word "republik" in 1845 (daijr), I don't think "orig. meaning" works on sense 2.
I wouldn't mind having "republicanism" on sense 1 as an n. I don't think it's a "true adjective" because it's only used like that in a couple of set words/熟語.

The JEs only have prenominal examples. A good example of the disconnect one often sees between the kokugos and modern usage.
