my version of daijirin doesn't have あきばこ at all (granted it's outdated). if 空箱 is really not [io] (according to the "daij" rule), then i agree they should be merged

Daijirin has it this way too. I'm inclined to merge the two entries, with a reading restriction on 空き箱.

When I look at Daijirin via Yomichan I see it gives カリ石鹸 as the main kanji form and adds "カリ石▼鹼" at the end. That ▼ usually signals an old/deprecated form. Possibly the Sakura site drops that bit.

For ref, I got my version here (I don't necessarily endorse this site; it's just where I found some of my dictionaries)
https://learnjapanese.moe/monolingual/#getting-and-using-monolingual-dictionaries

It's named '大辞林3' but it has some newer stuff, like the 2011 earthquake, so maybe it's a dump of デュアル大辞林
https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/大辞林

I also have a スーパー大辞林 epwing but only check it occasionally

The 大辞林 entries shown on the Sakura site use 鹸, but it may be that the site is substituting it for 鹼. Alternatively, it may be using a later edition.

  Comments:
My issue is that "bitter chocolate" doesn't seem
commonly used in English as a proper noun phrase (sorry
if I'm making up terminology here), while it is in
Japan. What I mean is, in English, "bitter chocolate"
generally means "chocolate that is bitter". "Bitter" is
just a descriptor. "Dark chocolate" on the other hand
doesn't refer to any chocolate that happens to be "dark"
in color or other qualities but to a specific concept,
i.e. a chocolate with a high-cacaco content.

I think the best gloss would be just "dark chocolate".
