Comments: | My first thought was "no way" as I was taught that わたし and わたくし were essentially the same. But I agree that the politeness, and slightly feminine nuance, not to mention the later senses, make it an uncomfortable combination. I've proposed a split. Aside: I first heard わたくし spoken in 1982 when we took my elder daughter (then 10) to a Girls Scouts meeting in Nagano-ken. They had a formal "promise" recital which included use of わたくし. I've also heard it used by males in formal speeches. |
