There are no other entries that begin with "(metaphor for)" which just seems like incredibly clumsy phrasing to me.

I'm putting the "(metaphor for)" back for the time being (no case was made for removal).
There are quite a few entries with parenthetical comments like this, and we probably need to consider at a policy level how they should be handled. One possibility is to have a [met] gloss-type tag as we do for expl/lit/fig/etc.
