I believe this also has a more general meaning of "throw oneself into" -- not necessarily water.  I've seen it used that way. As to the Google references, there were many examples of the form which I gave. I could copy a selection if you would wish.

I wondered if the reading [also picked up on the Google search] is the clue to usage. If the "間" were to be read as a stand alone contribution to the sentence, then in that case would the "ま" be the appropriate usage?

Pretty clear from WWW pages. The only other uses of 数育 are when the 数 is a suffix.
