Comments: | Hi. For many entries marked "n,vs", only a noun definition is given. This is often fine because it is easy to see what the verbal ("vs") meaning must be. However, in some cases, such as this one, it's less obvious. It would be nice in such cases to be given an explicit definition of the verbal meaning. |

Comments: | It appears to me that the reading of this word is もっこうざいく with a ZA. Every professional text-to-speach program I have used renders it this way, and this entry seems to confirm: http://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/srch/all/木工細工/m0u/ Google Translate romanizes as Mokkō-zaiku If I google もっこうさいく, the responses are almost all English-language dictionary entries, perhaps based on the entry here. A google search of "木工細工" ”もっこうざいく" appears to give more convincing Japanese language results. https://www.google.com/#safe=off&q=木工細工+"もっこうざいく" Anecdotally, I finally managed to draw this word on a chalk board in front of my native Japanese professor, and she immediately read もっこうざいく. |

Refs: | daijr, koj explicitly specify beetles for sense 1 (scarabs and closely related families). koj: 成虫・幼虫が動物の糞を食うコガネムシ科の甲虫の一群。 daijr: コガネムシ科や近縁の甲虫のうちで、成虫や幼虫が糞を食べる習性をもつものの総称。 = my english dictionary defines 'dung beetle' as exactly that definition: == a beetle whose larvae feed on dung, esp. a scarab. The larger kinds place the dung in a hole before the eggs are laid, and some of them roll it along in a ball. [Superfamily Scarabaeoidea, in particular families Scarabaeidae and Geotrupidae.] == relevant google image hits are exclusively beetles, from what i can tell |

Comments: | I haven't fixed the "readings" section. Might be simpler to make two entries and xref them (or just leave them as two independent entries). Combining the のこ and のこぎり suffixes in one entry gets a little unwieldy. This seems to be the only "saw" entry that has attempted it. I'm not sure we can claim that the kanji has one reading or the other. My intuition (from looking at hacksaws for a few hours) is that のこぎり would be the kanji reading, and ノコ would be an abbreviated, popular form. (hence the common representation in katakana). If のこ was *already* the kanji reading, I don't know why people would go out of their way to lengthen it. Take for example daijs for metal/hacksaw: https://kotobank.jp/word/金鋸-465416 かね‐のこぎり【金鋸】 But I can't imagine how you'd nail this down. |
