|
Comments: | Re "every source in English I can find treats viol and viola da gamba as synonyms. both are held between the legs." We have many sources which distinguish quite plainly between the two (my wife was a musicologist before she started concentrating on music education, and I have spent many years studying and performing music of the period, as well having been president of the early Music Society of Victoria.) While "viol" and "viola da gamba" were treated as synonyms until mid-late 17th century, by the 18th century the term "viola da gamba" was restricted to the bass instrument with a range similar to a cello. For example Bach's 3 sonatas for viola da gamba (BWV 1027-1029) were intended for this instrument; not the smaller members of the viol family. Certainly today if you called a treble or alto viol a "viola da gamba" in early music circles you'd get corrected very quickly. There is the issue of whether ヴィオラダガンバ/ビオラダガンバ is used in Japanese to refer to all members of the viol family. I can see no evidence of this, with most of the documents clearly referring to the instrument we know of as a viola da gamba. While I agree there is overlap between the terms, I think it will aid the clarity of the entries if we restrict "viola da gamba" to the ヴィオラダガンバ/ビオラダガンバ entry. |

Comments: | while this is quite off-topic for a dictionary entry: every source in English I can find treats viol and viola da gamba as synonyms. both are held between the legs. - I can imagine that the 'viol' name in English was confusing due to the (recently) much more well-known 'viola' and 'violin', so people started referring to it by its Italian name, 'viola da gamba', to make it stand out. - the only real difference I can find is that 'viola da gamba' specifically refers to the second-largest instrument of the viol family, the bass viol. (random house dictionary) - the Japanese wikipedia article for ヴィオール属 lists instruments such as baryton, double bass, and viola d'amore, which are instruments similar to -- but not considered a part of -- the viol family. there is no corresponding English wikipedia article. - I can, however, find a couple of pages on the www talking about ヴィオールs that are not gambas, seemingly confirming jawiki's interpretation, but these are usually pages about the history of the violin and are just mentioning them by passing. - whether edict should mention both or not, is a different question. |
