Refs: | The kokugos (smk, sankoku, iwakoku) also have these senses. The "soup stock" sense arguably doesn't deserve a [food] tag since it's an ingredient and not a dish. I think that's what we settled on IIRC. |

Wikipedia defines it as "ゴミやホコリを容器内に回収する家庭電化製品(掃除用吸引機)である。しばしば電気掃除機(でんきそうじき)ともいう。" It may mean having to split 掃除器 off into a separate entry but I do think "vacuum cleaner" should be the gloss here. |

Comments: | This expression [much like "かどうか"] picks up many Google hits [about 25m]. As with "かどうか", the novice tends to start off with "か" and when you decided to include "かどうか", you solved that problem of searching and finding for the novice. Now I am hoping that you will promote this expression on the same basis, because when one searches the main dictionary for "か否か" one gets nothing, but when one searches for "否か" one gets a mass of help; inevitably denied to those who need the help most, for example:- 申し出に対して受けるか否か 【?】 take it or leave it; WI4 真実か否か 【?】 truth or falsehood; WI4 犯罪が実際にあったのか否か 【?】 whether a crime has actually been committed or not; WI4 良いか否か 【?】 yes-no; WI4 [plus many, many others] Perhaps with the promotion of "か否か" one could tidy up the many WI4 entries which are less than complete. While noting the above, I take this opportunity of referring to the RH, which copies the main dictionary of "否か". This RH could be removed, i.e., 否か 【いなか】 (conj) .. or not 否か 【いやか】 (?) ???; RH |

"shit-eating grin" is a pretty good translation, it's a common English expression and will sometimes be the best translation, if not every time. doyagao is col if not vulg so it's not really that much of a jump to begin with. It's also good for reverse look-ups. |
