Comments: | i think it depends how you think most people would break down the comma and parentheses. if most people would understand it to mean "first day of spring according to the traditional lunisolar calendar [which is] approx. Feb 4th" then it's okay. if most people would understand it to mean "first day of spring [which is,] according to the traditional lunisolar calendar, approx. Feb 4th" then it doesn't work. i think this version's better though, because the intended meaning is more obvious to those who understand that there's actually no Feb 4th on the lunisolar calendar |

2. | A* 2011-02-16 23:04:04 Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...>
Comments: | i think this actually becomes more confusing with the explanation of the date. usually, when we think "first day of spring according to the solar calendar" that would be March 21 or thereabouts with the vernal equinox. 二十四節気 (of which this is one) are divisions of the ~lunisolar~ calendar (also called the "lunar calendar", which is where gg5 is getting "lunar" from) based on the position of the sun. but you can't say that it's "February 4th according to the lunisolar calendar" because there is no "February" in a lunisolar calendar because that's Julian/Gregorian (=solar). so it's the first day of spring according to the lunisolar calendar, which occurs on february 4th according to the solar Gregorian calendar. or such is my understanding |

|
4. | A* 2011-02-18 06:15:29 Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...>
Comments: | i can go either way. if we're going to include the meanings that stem from the -masu stem version of こぼす, should it be one sense combining all three senses of こぼす? or should we have [1] spilling [2] grumbling [3] letting emotion show [4] waste-water container. if we're going to combine all three senses into one, i think there at least be a note (and an x-ref) explaining why three disparate meanings are combined into one sense |
|
3. | A* 2011-02-18 00:17:46 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | So you don't think there's a role for a 零し entry coming from the verb 零す? WWWJDIC's text-glosser version generates one, then combines them, so we get "零し 《verb stem》 零す(P); 溢す; 翻す 【こぼす】 (v5s,vt) (1) to spill; (2) to grumble; (P); 零し; 溢し; 翻し; 翻 【こぼし】 ; (n) (1) (See 零す) spilling; grumbling; (2) (See 建水) waste-water container (tea ceremony); ED" Maybe that's all that's needed. |
