One more note.  I started googling "Harvard" "倍率" and trying to tease something out of it.  I find sites like this:

As you might expect, its Japanese people converting the 5%　acceptance rate to a 倍率 of 20.  


It seems that this is just the way Japanese minds evaluate university competitiveness, and I haven't yet found an English language analogue.  Anecdotally, google translate will produce garbage (eg "A school with a high magnification") if asked to translate this.

I think that in most contexts, the proper translation involves a numerical transformation.　Rather than "Tokyo University has a competitiveness rating of 4", "It has an acceptance rate of 25%".  Rather than "倍率が上がる一方だ", "acceptance rates keep on declining".

I almost think defining 倍率 should follow the model of something like 浄瑠璃

That would certainly be unambiguous, but it's also inventing a definition that I've not yet seen supported by an actual J-E or Japanese dictionary.

i think there ~may~ be a difference here: the difference between 'admiration' and 'praise' in english (i.e., the former is a private emotion, the latter is a public action; they're not the same).  koj, daijs, gg5, meikyo all support this division; daijr does not (it adds ほめる to the definition of 三嘆).  also, a legitimate definition was removed from 三嘆.

I saw this used in a novel from 1999 as 「速攻、メモる。」 when a character was jotting down when and where to meet a friend, so it isn't always used for attacks. I Googled some other non-attack-related verbs with it, and while none of them had a ton of results, it's still more than a handful.

i can't speak to ルミナス, but i don't see this being used adverbially in ALC.  they have 「速攻で＝straight away」, but it's not an adverb there, and the next example makes it clear that they're still talking about a swift ~attack~:

gg5 has 待期, but it doesn't have a translation for the term itself, only for 待期者 and 待期療法.  my guess is that it means "anticipating" as a simple reversal of 期待

i'm tempted to cut this submission down to 待期者, since it gets 4x as many hits, and because 受給待期者 and 待期者 seem to have a similar if not identical meaning.  see gg5:
待期者 〔厚生年金などの〕 a retired person who has not yet reached the age of eligibility for pension payments.
