I had never heard of Mrs Grundy, but I found one definition which says a "Mrs Grundy" is "An extremely conventional or priggish person" (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Mrs.+Grundy). Wikipedia alludes to someone who is "overly fearful of what the respectable might think". Perhaps one of those could be used? |

Comments: | When I've run across this term, it has typically been in the context of things actually physically knocking against each other. Perhaps that is captured by the first meaning, but taken as a whole, the current meanings present a more metaphorical sense of knocking together. I've not changed the definition, in case you feel "to knock (ideas) against each other" already covers it, but please go ahead and add a more physical meaning if you think it appropriate. The reference link has only the current JMDICT definition, but a couple of the example sentences there show the term used in this more physical sense. |

Comments: | ??? Do you mean the kanji part to be 主綱. 手綱 wouldn't be read おもづな. I can't see 主綱 being used as a word. |

Comments: | I ran across this word in a book, and couldn't find it in here. I looked on google, and I couldn't find any English definition, but I did get a number of hits, including a couple pages showing (and even explaining) this piece of horse-riding equipment: http://dac.gijodai.ac.jp/vm/virtual_museum/database/paged2/H11-PCD0064-H11-PCD0064-092m.html and http://www.bunkei.co.jp/cgi-bin/dprj.db.test/dac.cgi?mode=lev3&code=177 -- unfortunately, since they don't have an english definition, I'm not actually sure what to put for the meaning. 手綱 is "bridle", and I don't know enough about horse gear to know if one would use 主綱 as another word for bridle, or another part of a bridle... I'm sorry I can't be more specific, but I'm hoping that you might know how to translate it, since no one currently has an online definition! :-) |

Comments: | An alternate word for 総; although the reading そうかざり appears to have a special meaning in tea ceremony which I can't work out from online references (e.g., http://www.weblio.jp/content/総飾り). Perhaps you know of this? |
