Comments: | * Add gloss “start-up company” * Add clarifying note that this is NOT a venture capital firm (as the 国語辞書 indicate, this is for small product development/high tech companies). To elaborate: this point is potentially confusing and worth underlining because the terms “start-up company” (small research company) and “venture capital” (company with money, investing in small companies) are v. common (notably in US speech, certainly from 1990s to present) – while “venture company” and “venture business” are rarely used (IME – I have *never* heard the term “venture company” used to refer to a start-up company, but I’ve heard “start-up company” hundreds or thousands of times). Hence it’s easy to think that this term refers to the *investors* (money people) rather than the *small company* being invested in. (Sorry to go on – I was very confused by this.) |

Comments: | Looking for **"改定版" -"価格改定版"** gets a huge number of hits where 改定版 is plainly being used for 改訂版. It seems to be well on the way towards being used as an alternative, albeit incorrectly. I couldn't see any examples of it being used by itself to mean a revised price edition - 価格改定版 does, of course. I'm inclined to agree with Nils that it really has no separate existence, and is best merged with 改訂版, with an "iK" tag. |
|
2. | A* 2011-10-28 15:59:27 Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | i'm not sure about the merge. the two かいていs are not identical in meaning, and this one seems to be used in 価格改定版 a bit, which means "revised-price version" (a proper use of 改定). when used to mean "revised version of a textbook", 改定版 should be considered iK |

Comments: | Just to follow up on Rene’s comment (previous suggestion had been “venture-backed company” and “start-up company”): I do have relevant business knowledge and experience in this area, and the standard American English term for this is emphatically “start-up company/startup company”. The 和英 dictionaries that translate it as “venture” are hewing too closely to the Japanese – in American English (both business-speak and everyday speech), “venture” generally refers to the *capital*, not to the small company. (See longer comments at ベンチャービジネス.) Hope this helps! |
