Comments: | Both Tsuji (Japanese Cooking: A Simple Art) and Hosking (A Dictionary of Japanese Food) equate mitsuba and trefoil. I'd certainly like this one to be found by searching for "trefoil", but I guess that will happen because of sense 2. |
|
2. | A* 2011-10-20 05:33:27 Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | 1) according to the OED, wiki, etc. "trefoil" as a plant name usu. refers to something very different (e.g., http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clover, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotus_(genus)). i've added a second sense from koj, daij, etc. which covers e.g. gg5's use of 三つ葉の, in which case i believe "trefoil" simply means "three-leaved" 2) "wild chervil" from the original entry is usually/always Anthriscus sylvestris. i have added a new entry for it. many english websites have "Japanese chervil" for mitsuba, which does not seem to be ambiguous, so i have added it |
