Comments: | an additional form of this term is バードワッチャー = "bird watcher" (which i just read in a book). you may think this is unnecessary, but the dictionary includes "bird watching" and "bird call" and "bird sanctuary" and "bird bath" and "bird week", so this could be useful as well, particularly for beginning- level students. |

Comments: | this dictionary includes a lot of entries for onomatopoeic+と words/phrases (e.g., パチンと). i ran across one that isn't here which you will probably say is self-explanatory, but you can include it if you like. the phrase is ポッと, meaning "with a pop", as in the sentence 一番近くの街灯が、ポッと小さな音を 立てて消えた。(from ハリー・ポッターと賢者の石) the original english text is "The nearest street lamp went out with a little pop. Comments: | The species doesn't have a common English name, so the Japanese name is generally used. The obvious name "Japanese gaper" is used very rarely (I found 2 hits in papers from FAO etc.), so I've not included it. Also, "trough shell" is too broad (the family), so I've narrowed down to "species of <common name of genus>". |

▶ to build a house |
9. | A 2016-12-07 22:54:43 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | When I started looking at these edits my first thought was "why do we still have this?" It's from a range of entries which were added in bulk about 15 years aho which turned out to have a lot of very obvious constructions. I think it may as well stay now, given the Tanaka linkages (I don't want to have to go and reconstruct them.) As for 家をたてる, I think it should stay. This data is used by several text-glossing systems, and having variant surface forms for these sorts of expressions helps them quite a bit. I wouldn't lose sleep if it went, as it's ~0.5% of usage, but it's harmless. |
|
8. | A* 2016-12-07 15:59:49 Johan Råde <...address hidden...>
Comments: | But you might be right about adding 家をたてる. A few weeks ago I wrote a script that matches the Tanaka corpus against JMDict and reports discrepancies. I have been using that to add prio tags, add and remove [uk] tags, add missing surface forms, etc. But maybe I've reached the bottom of the barrel now. |

6. | A* 2016-12-07 14:46:12 Robin Scott
Comments: | Is it really necessary to acknowledge the kana form of 建てる? It's an extremely common word and I would put 99% of instances of 家をたてる down to 変換ミス. The same goes for similar entries. I'm not even sure this entry should exist at all. Since when has "build a house" been considered an expression? Is it any more noteworthy than "build a shed"? |
