It's not in other refs (including daijr or koj), and the source is 宇津保物語 from the 10th century. Related idiomatic expressions like "かまどを起こす" look very rare (no n-gram hits for any of its variant form or inflections), but they're recorded in modern references like sankoku. I wouldn't argue against their inclusion. To me, the "fortune / prestige" sense still seems like a reductive interpretation of the (rare) idioms. I think it relies on the context. |

I think the "household" and "belongings / fortune" meanings are just one sense. That's how the kokugos treat it.
かまど can be used in an idiomatic expressions like 竈を起こす ("to build a family's fortune / reputation") and 竈を破ぶる ("to bankrupt a family"), but I don't think those are reducible to 竈 = family assets. |
