All my refs say this is an abbreviation of 毛唐人.
Gendai reikai: 「毛唐人〔=毛深い外国人〕」の略。

I don't think the literal gloss is appropriate on this entry since it's an abbreviation.

For some reason the cross reference to 毛唐人 was lost. I am adding it back to the entry, but it isn't appearing in the Diff below for some reason.

This (and 毛唐人) are kanji translations. The literal meaning might be "hairy foreigner", fine, but none of the yahoo dictionaries actually 
define it as such (though Daijirin has an etymology note: "〔「毛深い唐人」の意という〕"). I think "damn Westerner" would be more apt.
