If I'm understanding correctly, a new moon is not visible to the naked eye. I think the Japanese word for "new moon" would be 新月, which the kokugos describe as 見えない or 見えにくい. 

三日月, on the other hand, is described in all the kokugos as 弓形の細い月. Despite what the JEs say, I don't think "new moon" is a correct gloss.

Only a kabuki pronunciation guide(?) gives みかずき, and I assume that's because it's pronunciation (みかづき not given).
