The Ichiman collection didn't differentiate on sense. The "gai1" came from simple high Google counts on an Eijiro-based gairaigo list. Since "ホール + hall" is much more common than the others I'm happy for the tag to stay here, but maybe "ホール + hole", etc. are common enough too. |

i think we need to be careful with the usage tags here. can we consult the original sources and check where the gai1/ichi1 came from? IIRC, gai1 should be linked to a specific english term (hall vs. hole), whereas ichi1 will be ambiguous. i suspect that ホール will also deserve some form of usage tag |

I think it *does* "[apply] to ホール itself". In the following examples, the word ホール is detached from the word スタッフ.
And ホール in these examples refers to the customer area of the business (usually a restaurant) as opposed to the backroom
(kitchen) area.

ホール here doesn't mean "dining hall", though it may be *derived* from it as wasei Eigo. A "dining hall" is a "refectory"
or "large room, typically in a school or other institution, in which people eat meals together". Restaurants generally
don't have areas that are called "dining halls" or "halls". In example 2 below, the restaurant is described as being like
a cafe, so it would be mystifying to read that this person worked in the "hall" of a cafe-restaurant in his/her student
days (unless you already know the term ホール or ホールスタッフ).

Just as "hall" in English has a lot of applications, and I don't think we'd have a sense for each one.
Note that "ホールスタッフ" is a special 和製英語, and I don't think it necessarily applies to ホール itself. |
