  Comments:
all kokugo dics specify a broader meaning (e.g. koj: 組の構成員。特に暴力団の一員。) i'm fine with including it as a broader first gloss.

  Comments:
It doesn't necessarily refer to a gangster, but any member
of an organization/company/club/group ending with 組, which
isn't uncommon among 建設会社 for example.
Maybe 2 senses though? jawiki says gang members are called
組員 even if the yakuza organization's name ends with 会
rather than 組. Also often used by itself (or 元組員) to
refer to gang members in newspaper headlines etc.
