"Moat" has the nuance of being large and water-filled. I think these are more wettish ditches. Better not to lead with that gloss.

http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/堀切_(曖昧さ回避)
「主に外敵の侵入防止のため城や集落の周囲に人工的に開削された溝(堀)の一種」
  Comments:
* Add “moat” – this is the most idiomatic English for this
ja:WP defines it as “A type of trench around castles and villages etc., primarily to defend against invaders/intruders.” …which is exactly what I’d call a “moat”.
Dunno if there are other senses; daijr/koj are admittedly vague, and this is a common name, hence hard to Google on.
(Like Jim, saw one around a castle.)

daijs has 堀切, both daijs and nikkoku mention 水路.
  Comments:
based on koj/daij i'm wondering if this is just a more general word for "man-made water channel", "artificial trench", etc.
