<upd_detl>English wikipedia, daijs, and sankoku (amazing...) all give sense [2] explicitly. Must be a bit of romanticized imagery to have such a high ngram count... (the action itself doesn't seem to have actually been so prevalent).
sankoku says 自さ, common n-grams suru usage is passive. I guess 辻斬り is just the act of testing the sword, and doesn't actually take an object.</upd_detl>
