<upd_detl>See notes/refs on 下弦 下弦の月, 弦月(eventually).  As with 下弦の月, this cannot be a waxing moon, because a waxing moon covers the whole period between the new moon (no moon) and full moon.  This is specifically a reference to the 1st-quarter half-moon, and no matter how generously you interpret the bowstring meaning of 上弦 to maybe encompass a "smaller" moon (I don't think it is generally used this way), it couldn't possibly exceed 50%. Wouldn't be a bow anymore.</upd_detl>
