<upd_detl>i've never understood the situation with の/乃/之. i know Paul wanted this entry for の to make text glossing easier, but none of my dictionaries bothers with entries for 乃 or 之.
i'd be happy to have only an entry for の, with "also written as 乃, 之" in a note. (see for example our entry for パン). having three different entries for の seems unnecessary.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>Paul's preference for having 乃/の as the main "の" entry was to do with linking from the Tatoeba/Tanaka sentences. Without a kanji headword, WWWJDIC can bring up any entry with a reading of の. He also suggested the solo entry for の, as several users couldn't find 乃/の and tried to create new "の" entries.
I'd be quite happy to have just "の (also written 乃", but give me time to look into the WWJDIC implications. I may be able to do a workaround.</upd_detl>

I still want to keep this distinct from the everyday の - these kanji forms are real outliers, and are not in most dictionaries.
