<upd_detl>Refs show both meanings, and the bias in the reading/meaning sets, but there is overlap.
For 手斧 Google images mostly shows hatchets, and a few adzes. (I've known the word "adze" as long as I remember. I don't think it needs to be explained.)
As for 釿, I can find no evidence of it being read ておの or ちょうな. Was it in curatorial note saying "釿 (ておの)"? If so it was more likely saying what the kanji means rather than giving its reading. 釿, which means hatchet, only has the ON readings of キン and ギン (according to the kanwas.)</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>dictionary defs definitely support 'adze' pretty much exclusively here, but there's no question that web hits go the other way</upd_detl>
<upd_refs>meikyo, daijs, wiki support the kanji addition for ちょうな.  nikk also supports it for ておの.</upd_refs>
