<upd_detl>* Split into various sections.
* Elaborate – esp. about the *distinctive quality* of a sound (e.g., “the sound of rain”)
FWIW, this word has lots of nuances – 大辞林 and 広辞苑 give many definitions.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>The sense of this word I was looking for is the in the example sentence ("The letter sounds forced" or more literally, "The letter has a forced sound"), but I don't think it is fully captured in any of the current meanings... it is something more like "the emotional tenor (of a letter, a sentence, a statement)". Meaning 3 sort of captures it ("a fine phrase") but doesn't quite nail it. I added "the emotion or feeling inspired by something heard or read" to meaning #3. Please amend as you see fit.</upd_detl>
