ja:WP defines it as “A type of trench around castles and villages etc., primarily to defend against invaders/intruders.” …which is exactly what I’d call a “moat”.
Dunno if there are other senses; daijr/koj are admittedly vague, and this is a common name, hence hard to Google on.
