<upd_detl>not very, i think. all dics (and wikipedia) have this as a type of サトイモ, which is Colocasia esculenta (the taro/dasheen), whereas yams belong to genus Dioscorea. but perhaps it's a colloquial definition of yam somewhere on the planet (or perhaps a bunch of dictionaries just copied one another)</upd_detl>
