Daijs, jawiki and other Japanese online sources treat プレイアブルキャラクター and プレーヤーキャラクター as synonymous. English Wikipedia also says "Some games, such as multiplayer online battle arena, hero shooter, and fighting games, offer a group of player characters for the player to choose from, allowing the player to control one of them at a time."

I saw the player character entries here and wiki treat the "player..." and "playable..." as synonyms but I disagree with that, PC is usually "the PC" and wouldn't be uses to refer to one of several playable characters
