ChatGPT: In Mahjong (麻雀) あがり役 refers to a "winning hand" (a completed set of tiles that meets the requirements to win the game). |

Both those glosses are in the relevant sense of the 役/やく entry, and do not reflect the あがり modifier.
I am going to revert this entry to the gloss Marcus established in 2012, and which has lasted until now. Although あがり役 is not in any references, I see that GT and other translation systems render it as "winning hand". I think that will do. It is the only meaning that makes sense in the many cases I have examined where it is used. I do not regard it as a synonym of 役/やく.
I will leave it open for a bit, but further attempts to gloss it just as "yaku" will be rejected. |

Having "yaku" alone as the gloss is rather tautological and useless. You need the yaku to win, but the "あがり" is indicating that this one comes out on top.
Maybe the 役/やく sense needs tweaking for mahjong.
I'll pin this down and then reopen for futher discussion. |

the first thing you learn from mahjong is that the goal, a complete hand, has:
4 mentsu, 1 pair (atama), and *at least one yaku*
you can have the suuankou yaku (4 mentsu) but still not have a complete hand because you're missing the pair.
I am not sure what a "winning yaku" is but the mj-dragon reference clearly says this term is a synonym of "yaku". you can replace "agariyaku" in the text quoted above and it still holds true.
a "winning hand" however is a hand that is complete. |

I have very little understanding of mahjong, but from reading a bit just now, isn't yaku a general term for a hand or combination to score with?
I asked chatgpt about it as well (take it with a grain of salt though):
Yaku: A yaku (役) in Japanese mahjong is a scoring pattern or hand condition required to declare a win (あがり, agari). Without at least one yaku, a winning hand is not valid. Yaku determine the base value of a hand and affect the final score.
agariyaku: In mahjong, あがり役 (上がり役) refers to a winning yaku, meaning a valid hand that qualifies for a win. In Japanese mahjong, a player must have at least one yaku in their hand to declare a win (あがり, agari). Examples of yaku include 断么九 (Tanyao, All Simples), 平和 (Pinfu, All Sequences), and 立直 (Riichi).
So could a correct gloss maybe be "winning yaku" or "hand containing a winning yaku" or "yaku needed for a winning hand"?
With an xref to 役[4]?
More chatgpt:
Q: "is it possible to win with just one yaku?"
A: Yes, it is possible to win with just one yaku in Japanese mahjong. Since a winning hand (あがり, agari) must contain at least one yaku, the simplest way to win is to complete a standard hand structure (four melds and a pair, or a special hand like 七対子 Chiitoitsu) while satisfying a minimum yaku requirement.
Common One-Yaku Hands:
立直 (Riichi) – Declaring riichi when in a ready state (tenpai)
役牌 (Yakuhai) – Having a triplet of dragon tiles (白, 發, 中) or the round/wind seat
平和 (Pinfu) – A hand of sequences with a two-sided wait
断么九 (Tanyao) – A hand with only numbers 2-8, no terminals or honors
門前清自摸和 (Menzen Tsumo) – Winning by self-draw with a closed hand
A player can win with only one of these yaku, but they must still form a valid winning shape (usually four melds + one pair). If a hand has no yaku, it is not a valid win. |
