Predecessor of ます, from whom it has been derived over time. Has been (at least for me) something I have been wondering about at some point. I think it's nice to have. I would've also liked to put e.g. a note alluding to the fact that masu has been derived from this. But I think that would make it messier more than it would be helpful.
