Ashes are interred, not buried. But the word is likely used for this makeup regardless of the body's ultimate fate. I don't think it needs to be explained, seems unlikely it'd be misunderstood as it is.

So if I get this correctly, in modern japanese funeral custom the deceased are almost always cremated right? So maybe just say "before cremation"?
But even then their cremated remains are still buried, no? Or is there something I am totally missing?
