I don't think the "(lack of) enlightenment or civilization" gloss is needed when there are already "unenlightened" and "uncivilized" glosses.

Sounds like this originally meant "darkness / fog / haze" but now only has this figurative meaning. Nikk: 暗いこと。… 転じて、人知が開けず物事の判断にくらいこと。
