Wiktionary explains this. 生 has replaced 棲 as a 代用字, since 棲 is a non Jōyō Kanji. So 棲息地, although not in dictionaries, is an alternative spelling of 生息地, and seems to not be obsolote.

<upd_detl>We don't have any sort of tag to denote 書き換え situations, but various kokugos say that "棲息地" is indeed the historically "correct" form.
We could update our 生息/棲息 entry (1379220) to make their distinctions clearer.</upd_detl>
